15. River Tam

When she wasn’t spouting such seemingly poetic nonsense in Chinese ("Stupid son of a drooling whore and a monkey") or finding new ways to outrun the Alliance, River Tam managed to become an unlikely sex symbol in the ’Verse.

Child prodigy, psychic weapon, limber ass kicker – Simon’s sister wears many hats as she keeps Captain Mal Reynolds and his crew on their toes, and discovering new ways of feeling awkward the longer they are in her company. (Example: "The human body can be drained of blood in 8.6 seconds given adequate vacuuming systems." Good to know, River.) But there’s nothing awkward about Summer Glau’s first big introduction to sci-fi, and her forever spot in every Browncoats’ girlfriend wish-list.

21. Inara Serra

As played by Morena Baccarin, Firefly’s Inara Serra was one of the most interesting female characters ever to populate a sci-fi series, if only because of her distinctly non-sci-fi profession.

The Joss Whedon show was of course set in an outer-space future that was very much inspired by the Old West, complete with a Civil War, horses, ranchers, and of course, whores. And that’s where the beautiful Inara came in for she was, in fact, a prostitute.

To be specific, she belonged to a group called Companions, high-priced ladies who were more geisha than call girl. Far more sophisticated than her fellow shipmates, Inara nonetheless develops deep feelings for them throughout the all-too-brief course of the show’s one-season (and one-movie) run, particularly for Captain Malcolm Reynolds.

Graceful, charming, intelligent, and hot, Inara Serra is way too much lady for most of you suckers reading this right now!

Honorable Mention

Saffron

Another Firefly lady, who is no lady at all actually, this character showed up a couple of times as the bane of Mal Reynolds’ existence.

Played by the unbelievably smoking redhead Christina Hendricks, Saffron is a two-timing con artist who uses her womanly ways to get what she wants, no matter who she hurts in the process. She is, masochists that we are, our kind of lady.
