A few moments with Stephanie Romanov, Christian Kane and Elizabeth Rohm

Friday 24 March 2006, by Webmaster

Unlike their typical events, Booster Events’ appearance at Wizard World LA did not have Q&A sessions. So, I thought I would take a few moments with each guest to ask some questions. Then try to write a report of their responses to share with those who couldn’t make it. And for those who did make it, maybe add a few more memories of the weekend.

So bare with me, I am not a professional journalist. Yeah, that will be the most obvious understatement made in this article. Because, the questions I wanted to ask before I left for Wizard World, were not the questions I remembered once I got there. Heck, I was lucky to remember my own name and there are quite a few who could confirm that. So I am letting you know ahead of time what to expect. Now onto the questions and I hope you enjoy it.

I started chatting with Stephanie Romanov, who is a hoot to begin with. But while I was doing this interview she kept making me laugh. So much so, I kept forgetting what it was I was going to ask her. But I did manage to ask her a couple of things. Like how things were going for her being a new mom? I will also mention that the proud momma had a few photos of her little girl that she was showing everyone who stopped by. By the way Lily is really a beautiful little baby and growing so fast.

Stephanie Romanov (Lilah Morgan)Stephanie : Motherhood is just the greatest gift ever, the best thing ever. Watching this child grow from a little baby into an individual. Loving it, loving her, loving everything.

You can really see it, too. If anyone asked about her daughter, she just glowed showing them the photos. Lily is one lucky little girl. Then I moved on to ask her about her character on Angel and her feelings about Lilah.

Stephanie : (laughing) It was very evil experience. I did a lot of evil things. (laughing) I enjoyed doing evil things. Of course, I’m a mother now and I feel differently. But at the time, there’s nothing like being bad.

So what’s next for Stephanie? Is she going to be a full time mom or a working mom?

Stephanie : Motherhood has been taking up most of my time, she’s only 9 months old but now I want to get back into acting again and hopefully something will happen. We’ll see.

I then asked if she thought some of the stronger female roles we’re seeing on television today, might have been influenced by the strong female characters from the Whedonverse. Also, if she thinks there might be a little Lilah influence in some of those characters?

Stephanie : I like that idea. I would like to think so. (laughing) I’ve always been very influential.

Moving backwards in time to another show she was on; Models Inc. I asked her about her experiences doing that show.

Stephanie : It was like a whole another lifetime. Models Inc was great ‘cause it was my first job, got my foot in the door, and I got an agent. Got the ball rolling. A great experience.

So what’s next?

Stephanie : Just getting back after losing the weight from the baby and getting into fighting shape. And hopefully get some kind of kick-ass role out there for myself.

Anything you want to say to the fans of the Whedonverse?

Stephanie : YOU ROCK !

Next, I moved on to the Verse’s favorite cop. Elizabeth Rohm was making her first convention appearance ever, so I thought asking her about that would be a good starting point for this chat.

Elizabeth : Yes, that’s true. But now I feel experienced, comfortable, and no longer a virgin. But don’t tell my boyfriend. I love it. I think it’s a threefold experience. One is that you get an opportunity to see the people that have really thought about the work that you’ve done. Where as you know sometimes, we are a little detached from the work that we do. Because we move on, we go someplace else, we get the next job, and what’s left behind is the audience reaction. So, they remind us of the things and the moments that we had, the things we’ve done that meant something to us. They keep it alive, that sense of joy about the experience. I left Angel about 5 years ago, so for me to go through memory lane with my co-stars, with the fans has been really wonderful. To see Joss Whedon, you know it just created a sense of pride in what I had done long ago.

Then I had to ask Elizabeth about the roles she had play, and what’s next. From cop, to lawyer, to FBI agent, what’s left — president?

Elizabeth : I think I’m a little bit more interested in playing leading ladies that aren’t so tough. I’m very much thought of as the person to go to for the cop, the lawyer, the FBI agent, the very intellectual, or physical badass. I want to play the softer, more loving, romantic comedy roles now. For the moment, I’m looking at some of those. I also loved what I have done so far. I think it’s my voice. I have a very deep voice that may be why I get cast as stronger women.

Since she said that about being cast as strong women, I couldn’t help but to ask about her last line on ‘Law & Order’, when she left the show and everyone found out Serena was a lesbian.

Elizabeth : Yes, I’m sure it is. I must be very masculine to them. (laughing) It was not a surprise to me. I had always had this funny thought in my head that maybe why Serena never flirted with Jack because she was gay. So when Dick Wolf came to me and said, “I have this idea for your departure.” I got a good laugh out of it.

To finish up I ask her the same question I asked the rest. Is there anything she would like to say to the ‘Verse fans?

Elizabeth : I would say to them that they made me have desire to always stay in the Sci-fi world. I’d love to do more traditional independent films and smaller stories about human experiences. But really nothing is more fun, exciting, or wild than sci-fi.

Last but not least, I got a chance to chat a few minutes with one of the Verse’s favorites. Christian Kane has been a busy guy as of late with acting, singing, and producing. And a new TV Show on CBS this season, ‘Close to Home’. His band; Kane; just got back from Nashville after playing a showcase for various record companies for a potential recording contract. He’s also preparing for his role as producer and star of the Indie horror film, ‘Death Walks the Streets’. And if that wasn’t enough to keep him busy, he also took the time to co-star in the just released ‘24’ video game.

Christian Kane (Lindsey Mac Donald) So, I thought I start there. I asked him how he came to be in the ‘24’ video game, and what it’s like to see himself in video game form.

Christian : Well I’ll tell you, it came about because the guys that were producing and creating the project, out of the UK. They were big ‘Angel’ fans as well as ‘24’ fans. So they said, “You know, what better villain to have than Angel’s ex-nemesis?” And so they called and said they wanted me to play a character named Madsen against Kiefer Sutherland’s. Of course I jumped at the chance to be able to work with Kiefer and to be able to work with those guys. You know playing the bad guy is always good. Plus you get to be in a video game, how cool is that? So that was good and they did such an excellent job of making me, look like me. They made me a little older than I really am, ’cause I’m supposed to be the same age as Kiefer. I just thought they did such a good job. I’m a badass in that thing. They did a really good job on the writing and on the graphics. The guy from the UK came up to me and said, “You’re the badest bad guy we’ve ever seen on videos.” So, from somebody who does video games all the time to say something like that, I take that to heart .I think we did a really good job on it.

Have you played the game yet?

Christian : I have not been able to play the game, yet. Because I‘ve been out in Nashville but I’m going home tonight. I just got my big screen setup, and I’m going to play it non-stop.

Since he mentioned being in Nashville, it seem like the perfect segue to roll on into asking him about how he felt the showcase for the record companies with his band went.

Christian : I felt we did really well. I know there is a lot of interest in Nashville right now. One being RCA records has really expressed some interest and that is about all I can say right now. I will keep you guys posted.

Now onto another project he has in the fire. The Indie horror film ‘Death Walks the Streets’ in which not only does he star, he is also executive producer on the project. In the cast is another ‘Verse guest star, Scott Schwartz who just so happened to be signing, about a stake’s throw from the BE booth. He stopped by the booth, so I could not pass up an opportunity to snap this shot. Anyway, back to the question and an update on the movies status and what it’s about.

Scott Schwartz and Christian Kane

Christian : ‘Death Walks the Streets’, we are not really sure about when it’s going to be coming out. You know it’s about vampires vs. werewolves vs. the mob vs. zombies, it’s all over the board. It’s going to be fun bringing that all back in. It’s definitely going to be a movie going experience. I’m looking forward to it. We are almost ready to get everything going and start filming. We want to make sure we get done right, we got a good people involved with this.

I mentioned about being and executive producer and ask him what’s next directing?

Christian : Yep, I’m an executive producer. I don’t want to direct. All my boys can direct, I’m just going to act and sing some music.

Boy, this guy is busy. Thankfully because of that, these questions came more smoothly. So I moved onto asking about his series ‘Close to Home’ on CBS. I ask if he has heard anything about it being renewed for next season, and with his law history from Angel have they ever ask him for law advice.

Christian : I have not heard if it’s going to be renewed or not. I don’t know. Oh, so she’s this attorney who has never lost a case. Guess what, Lindsey Mc Donald never lost a case either, so put that in your pipe and smoke it! (laughing)

You can tell Christian is really proud of the character he played on Angel, when you talk to him. I asked him what he thought about it being a Kane year, with everything he’s got in the fire.

Christian : We’re having a good time. The beginning of the year has started off good. I think we’ll ring out 2006 with a hell of a bang.

From seeing him at previous con appearances and knowing that he and David Boreanaz are like brothers, I couldn’t resist asking him if he had seen David’s new show, ‘Bones’. Not to mention that since a lot of ‘Verse guests have been showing up on that show this season, what are the chances we might be able to see him pop up as a guest some time in the future.

Christian : Oh yeah, big fan of it. I think it’s great. It’s cool to see him play a different character. Boreanaz is my best friend. You never know, man, we’ve talked about it but I’m over at CBS right now and he’s on FOX. We shall see, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a little bit of Kane on Bones at some point. It wouldn’t surprise me what so ever, but I don’t know for a fact.

One last thing. Do you have anything you’d like to say to your Whedonverse fans?

Christian : I had a pretty good run with Joss Whedon. He’s created a lot of stuff in my life that I am truly thankful for. I just talked to him today and he said he’s got Wonder Woman to do. He’s going to be busy for a little while but I wouldn’t be surprised if you see all of us doing something again. I’ll definitely work with Joss again, if he calls me. Just keep it alive, man. As long as you keep it alive there will always be some good times.
