Action Comics #844 (joss whedon mention)

Over the past five or six years, there has been no shortage of Hollywood talent eager to fulfill a childhood ambition and write for the comics. Creators making the crossover run the gamut from film directors like Kevin Smith and Joss Whedon to TV figures like "Grey’s Anatomy" executive producer Allan Heinberg. Rarely do these writers have a long history with the character they are seeking to immortalize in comics. That is, unless they’re Richard Donner.

The director of "Superman" I and II (Donner was removed from the sequel by the producers after much of the footage had been shot) tries his hand by taking over the writing chores at Action Comics. Donner will team up with Geoff Johns, DC’s top writer and his former assistant, for a run on the legendary book that launched Superman more than 50 years ago.

Johns and Donner are collaborating on "Last Son," a story in which a child, seemingly from Krypton, crash-lands on Earth. The tale kicks off with Superman fighting to protect the boy from sources in the government and elsewhere that would love to have a super-powered child to raise and mold to their vision. The storyline also promises the return of Bizarro and Lex Luthor.

Joining the Action Comics team on art is New Jersey’s Adam Kubert. This is Kubert’s first ongoing book since signing an exclusive contract with DC. To promote the book, Kubert will appear Saturday, noon to 2 p.m., at Dewey’s Comic City, 13 Park Ave., Madison. Kubert doesn’t do many personal appearances, so take this chance to meet one of the comics’ finest artists.

Action Comics #844 is 32 pages with a cover price of $2.99. The book is approved for all ages and is now available in comic shops.
