Another send-off movie

As the movie’s promotional material brags, Date Movie was written and directed by two of the six people who spoofed horror movies in the Scary Movie franchise. This time, it’s the romantic comedy genre that gets it.

Allyson Hannigan is the star of this comedic opus which also spoofs reality TV shows. The plot isn’t important. What matters is how it sends off movies like My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002), Meet the Fockers (2004), An Affair to Remember (1957) and even Kill Bill (2003)! The movie comes complete with the Bacharach number, "I Say a Little Prayer."

Many of the gags were designed to make viewers squirm. Others work because they effectively underscore the frivolity of romantic comedies. It’s not a great comic diversion but it nevertheless is a diversion.
