Ecnnews.com Alyson HanniganAlyson Hannigan - "Date Movie" - Ecnnews.com ReviewRosemary Ford Saturday 4 March 2006, by Webmaster Clocking in at only 80 minutes, "Date Movie" spoofs all those beloved romantic comedies - "Say Anything" and "There’s Something About Mary," for instance. Told in classic "Scary Movie" fashion (two "Date Movie" writers come from the franchise), this film has some humor that actually is funny, as well as some scenes that are just gross. The plot of "Date Movie" mirrors many of the movies it spoofs: Two people find true love, break up, get back together, are married and live happily after. Alyson Hannigan (of "American Pie" notoriety) is the overweight damsel in distress who finds her Prince Charming, Grant (played by Adam Campbell), on a reality TV show. She has to gain the support of her parents, and keep Grant’s ex-fiancee at bay until they are married. "Date Movie" does have some great jokes, especially those that poke fun at recent pop culture icons like Kevin Federline and Ben Affleck. However, "Date Movie," like the other "Scary Movie" flicks, has far too much toilet humor. This humor ruins scenes that could actually be funny, if the writers could be more mature than 10-year-olds for a few minutes. Although actors like Fred Willard and Eddie Griffin no doubt steal scenes, most scenes are ruined completely by eternal or overdone potty jokes. It takes away from the jokes that actually deserve laughs. "Date Movie" isn’t exactly the funniest movie, but it is entertaining. If you have ever seen any of the "Scary Movie" movies and actually enjoyed the spoofing, half the time immature humor, then you would not want to miss out on "Date Movie." Keywords |
