Autodesk is sponsoring two D-Cinema sessions at IBC in Amsterdam (southland tales mention)

Thursday 31 August 2006, by Webmaster

The sessions, held in IBC’s 1800-seat world class Digital Cinema, feature a range of companies showcasing audio and video innovations as well as the solutions of the future. Attendance is free for all IBC show-goers who present their attendee pass.

Saturday 9 September - 1pm to 2.30pm

Steven Poster, ASC, director of photography and president of the International Cinematographers Guild, and David Cole, colourist at Hollywood-based Laser Pacific, will present the work they completed with the Autodesk Lustre digital colour grading system for Southland Tales. Poster and Cole will discuss the difficulties faced in grading the film and how they were overcome using a combination of digital tools to achieve consistency throughout the movie-making process. Steven Poster received an Emmy nomination for his work on the HBO movie "Mrs. Harris." He also received an ASC nomination for Best Cinematography for Ridley Scott’s Someone to Watch Over Me. Poster’s many other credits include Donnie Darko, Stuart Little 2, Daddy Day Care, and Rocky V. He also filmed the controversial, award-winning Madonna video for Like a Prayer, and has done second unit photography on films such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Blade Runner.

Dave Cole recently joined LaserPacific and has worked on Clerks II, as well as the upcoming movies Crank, Captivity and El Cantante, in addition to Southland Tales. Prior to his move to LaserPacific, Cole was one of the lead colourists for Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring and Supervising Digital Colourist on King Kong. An early pioneer of DI in Australia, Cole has an in-depth understanding of Lustre and its capabilities.

Sunday 10 September - 11am to 12.30pm

Colourist Brett Manson and Visual Effects Supervisor Tracey Williams from The Video Lab will showcase the work they completed with Lustre for the Academy Award-winning film Tsotsi. During this presentation, Manson and Williams will discuss the various factors that lead to their decision to use Lustre. They will also explain how numerous challenges are overcome by using a digital medium rather than traditional colour grading methods.

Brett Manson joined The Video Lab in 1999. He has worked on 14 major international films as a visual effects artist and on an additional 11 films as a digital intermediate grader. These films include Slash, The Bone Snatcher and Critical Assignment. Manson’s skills as a visual effects designer and on set visual effects supervisor have made him a sought after asset on any film shot or finished in Southern Africa.

Tracey Williams acted as digital film producer and visual effects supervisor on Tsosti. She has also worked as visual effects supervisor, producer and digital film producer on 30 other features including: PREY, Mama Jack and Duma. In addition, Williams animated the first 2D cartoon series ever produced in South Africa, Oom Kaaspas.
