"Avengers" Movie in Top Ten Comic Book Movies

Friday 7 September 2012, by Webmaster

Since every other publication is doing a "top ten" comic book movies, I figured I might as well too. But my choices will certainly be different - and in a couple of cases controversial. For the most part I included only one movie from each series, with one special exception. This isn’t the best ten comic book movies, but are special for some reason, and ones which you should watch - especially if you missed them when they were first released.

Avengers (2012)

This may move up to the number one spot on my list after the Blu-Ray/DVD comes out. That is supposed to have an extra half hour of deleted scenes, primarily involving Steve Rogers (Captain America) and the now elderly Peggy Carter who he knew during World War II. It’s a more intimate less action-y story and with director-screenwriter Joss Whedon’s reputation I’m certainly looking forward to it.

"Avengers" is an amazing action movie and one with many wonderful characters. Because the movie has six heroes (seven if you count Nick Fury) teaming up to fight the villain there’s barely room for any other characters. The only new character in the entire movie (including supporting characters), which hasn’t appeared in an earlier movie leading up to "The Avengers", is SHIELD agent Maria Hill. Each of the primary characters has excellent scenes and moments. The movie concentrates mostly on Iron Man and Captain America but everybody has their own chance to shine.

A handful of actors, famous from a generation ago, appear in small roles including Powers Boothe, Jenny Augutter, and Harry Dean Stanton.

Only one actor who has done significant work with director Joss Whedon in the past worked on the "Avengers", Alexis Denisof (Wesley on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel"). He appears as "The Other", the alien being who interacts with Loki.
