Azstarnet.com FireflyBenefit to show "Serenity", "Buffy"Erin White Monday 19 June 2006, by Webmaster "Serenity" fans refuse to let their favorite film die. The browncoats, as director Joss Whedon’s rabid fans are known, wielded enough Internet clout to resurrect canceled cult-TV show "Firefly" onto the big screen as the movie "Serenity." Now they’ve gotten "Serenity" back into theaters. As part of a worldwide benefit for Equality Now, which works against violence and discrimination against women and girls, the 2005 sci-fi/Western will screen at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Loft Cinema, 3233 E. Speedway. Similar screenings will occur in more than 35 cities across the United States this weekend, which just happens to begin with Whedon’s 42nd birthday on Friday. (Told you these fans were serious.) Locally, the Loft has turned the fund-raiser into a Whedon double feature, complete with a "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" singalong. Two episodes, "Hush," in which the characters lose their voices, and "Once More With Feeling," a musical show, will play after the film. "Buffy" starts at 10 p.m. Audience participation will be encouraged. "It’s kind of like ’The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ with vampires," said Jeff Yanc, program director for the Loft. Yanc said "Buffy" screenings have been popular at other independent theaters across the country. Those not so familiar with Sunnydale, Calif., can keep up with the musical participation via the words on the screen. Tickets are $10 for "Serenity," $5 for "Buffy" and $12 for both.
