Buffy/Angel Spinoff/Movie don’t seem to be on anyone’s front burner

Q: Mary of Madison - Are you going to the network upfronts for their new seasons? If so, could you ask David Janollari of The WB how the Buffy/Angel movies are coming? Specifically a Spike movie or spinoff starring James Marsters?

A: Joanne Weintraub - Wish I had some info for you, Mary, but the fan sites are ominously silent on the subject of a new Buffy movie. Not a good sign. As you probably know, Joss Whedon recently finished the screenplay for his Serenity feature, based on the old (well, not so old) Firefly series, and is supposed to start work on the Wonder Woman movie shortly, so Buffy/Angel/Spike don’t seem to be on anyone’s front burner. Re the May upfronts in NYC, those are sessions for advertisers who want to sample the new "product" in the spring; I don’t get to cover those. Instead, I go to the press tour for critics in July & January in L.A., where we get to see later, more complete cuts of the pilots. It’s always interesting to read what comes out of the upfronts, though.

  • That person doesn’t seem to have a clue what she’s talking about. Joss "recently finished the screenplay" for Serenity?! Jeez. And Joss wouldn’t be directing the Spike tv-movie himself. He’s stated in several interviews that there are others who worked at Mutant Enemy that he could trust completely with that task. And we all know that Joss is the master-juggler of simultaneous projects... ;) James wants it to happen, Joss wants it to happen and the people at the WB want it to happen. A Spike tv-movie is NOT as unlikely to happen as this woman seems to think.
