Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Buffy Makes Matt Roush’s Best Of The Decade list

Wednesday 30 December 2009, by Webmaster

13. Buffy the Vampire Slayer I’m stretching the rules here a bit. A few of the shows listed (Sopranos, West Wing, Jon Stewart’s reign) began in 1999, not achieving their fullest impact until the 2000s, but Buffy bridged the decades from 1997-2003 and may in fact belong to the 90s. In its latter years, though, this enduring supernatural allegory had some of its finest (although also some of its least fine) moments, including the remarkable “The Body” episode (in which the death of Buffy’s mother from natural causes shook this family of friends to its core) and the captivating musical episode “Once More With Feeling,” which stunningly fused original song with pivotal narrative like no show has done before or since. For that episode alone, I’d put it on any greatest-hits list of the 2000s.
