Sarah Michelle Gellar

The Sarah Michelle Gellar ready reckoner

Thursday 7 August 2008, by Webmaster

Another actress, who actually has a name to care for is Sarah Michelle Gellar and there are not no many accomplishes films at her but an few I can probably enjoy. The talent agent found Gellar a young age and made her screen debut at 6 of each of the 1983 television film An Invasion of Privacy. With all the promise she showed, Barrymore starred as Hannah in the teen drama series "Swans Crossing" (1992) but it was her portrayal of a young and callous rich girl in Al-Lucinda Kendall Hart on ABC daytime soap opera "All My Children" (1993-93), that won her Daytime Emmy Award and spring-boarded her to stardom.

SMG’s real mark worldwide, however, was the character of Buffy Summers in the game-changing series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997-2003). She won five Teen Choice Awards, a Saturn Award and a Golden Globe nomination for her role, establishing herself as a cultural phenomenon. Sarah Michelle Gellar likewise has the box office to back her up, with “I Know What You Did Last Summer” 1997), “Scream 2” (1997), “Cruel Intentions” (1999)and way movies like those that help prove she is also a bankable star as well over $570 million times worth crazy in global gross.

Beyond her cinematic successes, Gellar has made her mark on television, headlining shows such as "Ringer" (2011-2012), "The Crazy Ones" (2013-2014), and "Wolf Pack" (2023). She has also lent her voice to popular series including "Robot Chicken" (2005-2018), "Star Wars Rebels" (2015-2016), and "Masters of the Universe: Revelation" (2021).

In 2015, Gellar ventured into the entrepreneurial world by co-founding Foodstirs, an e-commerce baking company, and published her own cookbook, "Stirring Up Fun with Food," in 2017. Gellar is also known for her close-knit family life, married to actor Freddie Prinze Jr. since 2002, with whom she shares two children.

Sarah Michelle Gellar’s commitment to her craft is matched by her dedication to personal growth and unique experiences. An accomplished martial artist, she studied Tae Kwon Do for five years, alongside kickboxing, boxing, street fighting, and gymnastics. Her dedication to authenticity in her roles is evident, such as her commitment to doing her own stunts in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," though she admitted her limits during filming "Scream 2."

Her career is also marked by interesting anecdotes, such as her role in a 1982 Burger King commercial, which led to a lawsuit from McDonald’s and a temporary ban from their establishments. Notably, she dyed her naturally brunette hair blonde for her role in "Buffy," and legally changed her last name to Prinze as a surprise for her husband on their fifth anniversary.

Sarah Michelle Gellar’s legacy extends beyond her on-screen roles, encompassing her work in philanthropy and her reputation for safety and professionalism on set. She remains a beloved figure in Hollywood, admired for her talent, dedication, and the breadth of her contributions to film and television.

Sarah Michelle Gellar isn’t just Buffy, y’know. Nope. She’s been in other things, too. Nothing as good, obviously...

I have a nasty habit of staying loyal to actors I enjoy. The Buffy cast is a prime example of this. I’ve lost track of the many terrible, terrible films I’ve watched because David Boreanaz/Seth Green/Eliza Dushku was in it. So I’ve seen more than my fair share of Sarah Michelle Gellar projects. Here’s the lowdown...

Suburban Girl (2007) 1 out of 5

SMG plays an ambitious but neurotic woman chasing a promotion and an older man. Horribly selfish, the end of the film sort of implies that if you’re a bad person you’ll end up unhappy, but it’s kind of garbled and anyway, it’s really not very good. At all.

The Return (2006) 1 out of 5

This is a tedious, incoherent mess of a ghost story which takes all the tired old cliches of this kind of horror movie and does nothing even slightly interesting with them. Sarah Michelle Gellar is wasted on this crap.

The Grudge 2 (2006) 3 out of 5

Three stars is maybe slightly over generous, but for some reason I really enjoyed this sequel of a remake of a remake... of a sequel? Can anyone keep track of the Grudge movies any more? Either way, this one is entertaining enough, but Sarah Michelle Gellar’s role is really more of a, er, cameo, shall we say?

Southland Tales (2006) 3 out of 5

Yes, Sarah Michelle Gellar plays a porn star. No, that doesn’t mean what you’re probably hoping it means. Richard Kelly’s troubled second movie is overlong and even more incomprehensible than Donnie Darko; the best scene features Justin Timberlake and a Killers song.

The Grudge (2004) 2 out of 5

Tedious retread of an already not brilliant movie. I feel bad giving the sequel an extra star, but I really enjoyed it more than this. Sorry, Sarah.

Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004) 2 out of 5

The dangers of going in reverse chronological order strike again! Sarah Michelle Gellar is a competent Daphne; this probably isn’t as good as the first Scooby Doo movie, but neither of them are great. Neither of them are as bad as you’ve probably heard, either. But it’s really Matthew Lillard’s show. I could mention Sarah Michelle Gellar’s real-life husband (... I’ve only just remembered that she did change her name recently to reflect her marriage, but I’m way too far gone now to change anything!) Freddie Prinze Jnr, but, um. He’s kind of unremarkable. He probably could have been replaced with a cardboard cut-out without anyone noticing.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003) 5 out of 5

Every single episode of every single season of Buffy probably deserves its own individual star rating, but I’m just going to go ahead and award the series, as a whole, the highest possible rating. It’s my favourite series of all time. If that doesn’t warrant a 5/5 from me, what could? This is Sarah Michelle Gellar’s defining role, the thing she’s best known for, and by far the most complex and interesting character she’s ever played. Mostly ’cause she played her for 7 years.

Scooby Doo (2002) 2 out of 5

Matthew Lillard’s chemistry with a computer-generated cartoon dog lifts these films out of the hole they’d otherwise be consigned to. Sarah Michelle Gellar is, y’know, fine, as Daphne. It’s not the world’s most challenging role, is it?

Cruel Intentions (1999) 2 out of 5

Yeah, all anyone remembers from this is Sarah Michelle Gellar kissing Selma Blair and flirting obscenely with Ryan Phillippe. Now that the rampant teenage hormones have calmed down, though - it really wasn’t much cop, was it?

Scream 2 (1997) 4 out of 5

Possibly the best horror movie sequel ever made, this was kickass. Really, really scary. The only thing that mars Sarah Michelle Gellar’s performance is that she’s playing exactly the type that both the Buffy and Scream franchises were designed to ridicule - the brainless blonde who, when confronted with a knife-wielding maniac, screams and runs upstairs to her doom. It’s still a fantastic movie, though.

I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) 2 out of 5

Distressingly, I Know What You Did Last Summer is one of the better teen horror franchises that was hastily knocked out to take advantage of Scream’s popularity. It was never anywhere near as good. Sarah Michelle Gellar doesn’t even get the Last Girl role, instead meeting her doom metres away from a marching band. No, seriously.

Not seen: Simply Irresistible, Harvard Man, Happily N’Ever After, The Air I Breathe, TMNT, Possession...

In conclusion, then: following actors from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to their other projects is almost always a waste of time. It’ll only be a bitter, bitter disappointment.

Ah, but what about Alyson Hannigan? Date Movie wasn’t that awesome, but How I Met Your Mother is the bomb!

Alyson in the Movie "Rip Off" The film was appalling but Alyson played a junky called Lexi, and I have to say, she was really brilliant. I did also see her on stage in When Harry Met Sally...Let us say that she is a good film actress.

As to SMG. I have to agree. It is her choice of projects that seems to be wrong. She was good in the Grudge but the film was pants.

Here are a couple of the missing pieces...

    Simply Irresistible (1999) 1 out of 5.

A romantic comedy with few laughs and little chemistry. A dull script poorly realized. I give it a star, only because Sarah has the lead role.

    Harvard Man (2001) 2 out of 5.

A message movie, so it gets an extra star for trying to be worthy. Not much excitement, despite having 2 sex scenes. Sarah’s role is not huge. Snoozarama.
