Arizona.edu Buffy The Vampire Slayer"Buffy" fans have something to sing about around tucsonDavida Larson Thursday 7 September 2006, by Webmaster Fans of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" have another chance to sing its praises. On Friday, The Loft Cinema will present a second showing of "Once More, With Feeling," the musical episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" in which a musical demon comes to town and forces the inhabitants of Sunnydale to sing, dance and put on a show. The first showing of "Once More, With Feeling," held in July, was a sold-out success. "The Loft understands the cult appeal of (Buffy). There is a market for this," said Heather Cordova, host of the event and a member of the Arizona Browncoats, who are co-sponsoring. "It’s an opportunity for people just to geek out a bit," she said. The Arizona Browncoats are an organization created for fans of Joss Whedon’s cancelled 2002 TV show "Firefly" and its 2005 spin-off movie "Serenity." Whedon also created the "Buffy" series and its spin-off counterpart "Angel." Cordova said the Arizona Browncoats are "primarily ’Firefly’ fans, but there’s overlap." In addition to the musical episode, The Loft will be showing "Buffy’s" unaired original pilot, an unearthed treasure seen by few fans. The black-and-white episode featured actress Riff Regan playing the character of Willow, a role that was eventually given to Alyson Hannigan. "Sunnydale High" is referred to as "Berryman High School." Attendees are encouraged to come dressed up as their favorite character from the "Buffyverse," a term that refers to the universe of "Buffy" and includes the show "Angel" in its definition. Prizes will be given out for the best costumes, including gift certificates to Bookmans Entertainment Exchange. "It was a lot of fun last time," Cordova said. "It’s cool to sit in a theater of people who are really into it." The Loft plans to make the Buffy Sing-Along a regular event. "We’ll probably do it a few times a year," said Casey Dewey, assistant manager at The Loft. "It’s really popular." Dewey said there are no plans to have Whedon speak at a Buffy Sing-Along event, although he said The Loft would be open to the idea. "If we could do that, we definitely would." The show starts at 9 p.m. Tickets are $5 and Buffy goodie bags are $3. Tickets are on sale now at The Loft Cinema, 3233 E. Speedway Blvd. |
