‘Buffy’ festival will scare up funds for library

Chandler is preparing a daylong celebration of the life and times of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" this weekend while raising funds for the Chandler Public Library.

Craig Younger, city public information officer, said the library has held events in the last few years for teens showcasing popular movies and television shows. But the city didn’t want to limit the fun of "Buffy" to young people, he said.

"When we noticed there were national conventions for this show, similar to the ‘Star Trek’ conventions that have been held for years, we knew that there was really a audience that would enjoy coming together and reminiscing about the show," said Younger, a self-described "Buffy" enthusiast.

Bob Leister, 55, Chandler’s video production supervisor, said he’s a big fan of the show and volunteered for the committee organizing Saturday’s event at the downtown main library.

"For me, occasionally we had get-togethers as a group" to watch the series, he said. "I think when people get together and watch it as a group, it’s amazing to watch how other people react. I think it’s a big pull to give people a chance to say goodbye as a group and remember how good the show really was."

Younger said the free event will include a costume and look-alike contest, trivia contests and viewings of favorite episodes. He said raffle tickets and food and beverages will be sold, with proceeds benefiting the Friends of the Library and the Chandler Public Libraries.
