Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Buffy’ returns to the big screen

Saturday 27 June 2009, by Webmaster

There has been a surge of vampires on both the big and small screen of late, and like a proverbial swarm of cobras, there will naturally follow the proverbial mongooses (mongeese?) to take a bite out of them. And so we have news that everyone’s favorite Chosen One will be returning to the big screen, hoping to capture the hearts of fans once again to the tune of $12.75 a pop.

The Buffy saga began with the 1992 movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer, starring Kristy Swanson and Donald Sutherland (yes, Donald Sutherland). The movie proved that trying to mix horror and comedy intentionally is a slippery slope, but it did have Rutger Hauer as an ancient vampire who fiddled at inappropriate intervals, so it wasn’t all bad. Then came the brilliant 1997 television reboot by creator Joss Whedon, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. Whedon redeemed himself for the generally terrible movie with the long running and critically-acclaimed series, which ran for seven seasons and managed to be both humorous and scary at times, with a fantastic cast, witty dialogue and intelligent story arcs.

So what will the new Buffy movie be exactly? Will we get a fan-pandering flick with Gellar, David Boreanaz and the gang, or will we get a new Buffy, with a new cast, new setting, and new bloodsuckers to stake? Hollywood Reporter confirms that the project is in the works, and will likely be a ‘reboot’ of the series, along the lines of Batman and other superhero franchises. One person who definitely will not be returning to the ‘Buffy-verse’ is Joss Whedon, who has said publicly to Entertainment Weekly that he will not be involved with the new project in any way. This could be bad news for the upcoming production, or it might be the saving grace. Whedon hasn’t had the greatest success with movies (i.e. the first Buffy movie).

So we will have to wait and see how the reboot plays out. One thing is pretty much for sure though; where there is Buffy, there will likely be sexy male vampires to keep her on her toes. So, in the interest of keeping vampire fans and slayers alike happy until Buffy comes back to the big screen, please enjoy this humorous take on a Buffy-Edward Cullen of Twilight fame meeting by rebelliouspixels (warning Twilight fans - Edward doesn’t exactly come out the better of it):
