Uncg.edu Buffy The Vampire Slayer"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" Screening / Lecture Series Begins Sept. 6, 2006Jill Yesko Tuesday 29 August 2006, by Webmaster The cult television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” will be examined through a year-long screening and lecture series, titled “Why Buffy Matters: The Smartest Show on Television,” which opens Wednesday, Sept. 6, at UNCG. From September through March, two Buffy episodes will be shown each month followed by a lecture to discuss the meaning of the show and its importance to popular culture. The programs are sponsored by the UNCG Women’s and Gender Studies program, the Department of English and the University Libraries. Showcasing the entire series, the first screening and lecture will be held Sept. 6. The free, public programs will begin at 7:30 p.m. and fall semester events will be in Room 1214 of the new Hall for Humanities and Research Administration on Spring Garden Street. Subsequent dates are Wednesdays, Sept. 20, Oct. 4 and 25; Nov. 1 and 29; Jan. 17 and 31; Feb. 7 and 21 and March 7. The series culminates with a “mini-Buffy” conference on Friday, March 16. UNCG alumna Rhonda Wilcox ’73, professor of English at Gordon College and founder of Slayage: The Online Journal of Buffy Studies will present the final lecture. Wilcox is also the author and editor of several books on the show, including “Why Buffy Matters” and “Fighting Forces: What’s at Stake in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” |
