Bones : The Blonde in the Game

(S02E04) Wow, can you believe we’re already up to the fourth episode of the season? So far, every episode has been a good one. Now, let’s not waste any time in getting to this week’s review.

This was a very solid episode. At first, I wasn’t fond of the whole ’serial killer murders while in jail’ scenario, because its been played out in movies and television a few thousand times (and, why does the serial killer always think they’re in the driver’s seat when he (or she) is in jail on the way to an early dirt nap?). But, as Bones and Booth got down to tracking the killer I was really into the story. The best part was that I had no idea whatsoever on who the actual killer really was. This is refreshing, because in the previous episode of Bones I knew who the killer was in the first 20 minutes.

In fact, when they revealed the killer (who I will not reveal for those who have not seen the episode yet) it was totally out of left field. That is a sign of a good procedural crime drama. Because, if you already know who the killer is in the first few minutes of the show the fun of figuring it out with the characters is ruined. I really hope to see more of that on this show.

What I also want to see more of, and got this episode, is meatier roles for the rest of the Jeffersonian Institution team. I have to give kudos to Michaela Conlin as Angela Montenegro and Eric Millegan as Zach Addy. For the last three episodes they’ve been staying in the background. This time around, though, they really shined in their roles. Particularly Conlin as Angela. From a person who never saw any of the past season’s episodes, I thought that she really took over in many scenes. In particular, the scene where she meets up with the serial killer’s wife in order to try and pull some information from her that Booth and Bones couldn’t in past rounds.

Other things I liked about this episode. Well, there was Jack Hodgins’ brief synaptic meltdown when Booth was trying to pull some information out of him on where another victim was being hidden. This proved that even the most intelligent of us is fallible. Then, there was an easing of tensions between Bones and her new boss. And, as usual, there was the fine teamwork of David Boreanaz as Agent Seely Booth and Emily Deschanel as Bones.

Finally, there was a little turning point in the life of Doctor Temperance "Bones" Brennan. At the end of the show Bones and Booth discover where the killer is hiding (once again, I’m not telling!). Booth goes after him, but not without giving the good doctor a gun. Booth gets nabbed by the killer, and is about to become another victim, when a shot rings out and a bullet slams into the murderer. It’s Bones; she has killed another human being. Later, Seely confronts Temperance about it to tell her it will eventually be all right (Booth once killed a person, as well). If you look at this a certain way it seems that the relationship between Booth and Brennan has reached a new level that we may see return in future episodes.

  • I agree with the reviewer in that ALL this seasons episodes have been good. I too liked the fact that we the audience were in the dark just as Bones and Booth were as to who the accomplice was. And the talk at the end reminded me of another certain tall dark and handsome avenger telling another woman that he knew how it felt to kill another human being...the cost is high. I also think that the Jasper thing has brought the duo to another plane in their relationship. One that I hope will only strengthen as the season progresses. And one more thing. Boreanaz was and still is, the hottest guy around!
