Der Kindestod - Sideshow Exclusive

Death and Buffy Summers have faced off so many times it’s almost laughable, but there was nothing funny about the form it took as the memorable demon, Der Kindestod in “Killed by Death.” Literally meaning “child death” in German, Der Kindestod is death personified, taking the shape of a horrific figure with a wrinkled, pasty-white face, a mouth full of protruding sharp teeth and clear lifeless eyes that evokes sheer terror in its victims. A hideously clever beast, it remains invisible to the healthy world, but to those children that are very sick or close to death itself, Der Kindestod can appear. It then slowly feeds off the child, taking their essence from them through his set of eyes that bulge into a grotesque sucker that attaches to the forehead of the victim. While the child thrashes in pain and fear, Der Kindestod gleefully steals their life until silence and death is all that remains.

“Cause it would be looking at the children’s ward as basically an ‘all-you-can eat’ kind of thing, you know.” - Cordelia Chase about Der Kindestod.

Buffy crosses paths with Der Kindestod on two occasions with very different outcomes. At the age of eight, Buffy witnesses the gruesome but mysterious death of her beloved cousin Celia at a hospital. Nine years later, Buffy finds herself in a hospital suffering from a nasty bout of the flu and exhaustion from Angelus. In her fevered dreams, she “sees” the terrifying demon roaming the halls of the hospital. With the help of a little boy named Tim, Buffy and the Scoobies investigate the mysterious deaths of several children in the hospital, which leads to their discovery of Der Kindestod. With the help of Cordelia and Giles’ research they determine the demon’s macabre purpose. Finally connecting Der Kindestod to Celia’s death, Buffy bravely ingests a live virus that takes her near death so she too can see and fight the demon. After a brutal battle, she snaps the demons neck and death, in the form of Der Kindestod, is no more.

  • Don’t most people hate this episode? Does he really deserve his own figure? The Master, I get, but is this really necessary? Why not a Glory figure or The Mayor or even Adam?
  • what the heck? that episode sucked. Why not give us a line of all the main baddies and then get down to favorite baddies from individual episodes like Hush. I don’t understand why they’d make a doll of a really disliked character.
  • I enjoyed the episode, and Der Kindestod was definitely one of the creepier monster to appear on the show.
  • I don’t blame you there...I didn’t really like that episode...he shouldn’t get his own action figure. It would be a lot better to have one of Adam or Glory b/c they were in a lot more episodes than this guy was.
  • yeah i agree, there’s other character’s that should’ve been made before this guy. i’ll still get it though, since i’m collecting all the SideShow Collectibles. the artists who do them are brilliant and its worth the money to me.

but yeah, i’d rather see a Glory or Adam doll. and maybe an Anyanka one. i’m not too surprised that they haven’t made one of Xander, Dawn or Giles, just b/c they didn’t really have anything overly exciting about them to make a figure for.

i’m hoping they start making figures from "Angel" as well. we already have Angel, vamped and normal. i’d like to see a Cordelia one, as well as Doyle and Illyria. let’s cross our fingers!
