Deseretnews.com Final season of ’Ellen’ to hit store shelves (david boreanaz mention)Chris Hicks Monday 27 November 2006, by Webmaster Here are new DVDs of TV shows, scheduled to be in stores on Tuesday. • ELLEN: THE COMPLETE SEASON FIVE (A&E, 1997-98, not rated, three discs, $49.95). This is the final season of the sitcom Ellen DeGeneres used to out herself. She plays a bookstore owner, with associates played by Jeremy Piven, Joely Fisher, David Anthony Higgins and Clea Lewis. While there’s no arguing that DeGeneres is clearly at her best with the daytime talk show she does now, and that the stifling format of a sitcom has trouble showing her off to best advantage, the fact that she’s one of the funniest people on the planet rings through these episodes. Guest stars include Jennifer Aniston, Woody Harrelson, Phil Donahue, Emma Thompson, Anne Heche, Cindy Crawford, Sarah McLachlan, Angie Dickinson and Louis Gossett Jr. Extras: Full frame, 22 episodes, bloopers, text biographies • BONES (Fox, 2005-06, four double-sided discs, $49.98). David Boreanaz, who won fans on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and its spinoff "Angel," co-stars here with Emily Deschanel in a "CSI"-style crime drama that focuses on cold cases solved by a pair of mismatched investigators. He’s a cocky FBI agent; she’s an introverted anthropologist. The drawback is that it looks like too many other shows that are on right now - dark, occasionally too gruesome. But if you like the stars, you’ll like the show. Extras: Widescreen, 22 episodes, audio commentaries, featurettes • CRIMINAL MINDS: THE FIRST SEASON (CBS/Paramount, 2005-06, six discs, $68.99). Similarly, this police procedural is overly familiar, but it also goes much further on the gross-out scale, as an elite team of profilers goes after serial killers each week. Mandy Patinkin and Thomas Gibson ("Dharma & Greg") star, and I like both actors, but this one’s a bit much for my taste. Extras: Widescreen, 22 episodes, deleted scenes, audio commentary, featurettes • MARSHALL UNIVERSITY: ASHES TO GLORY (Docudrama, 2000, not rated, $26.95). In anticipation of the dramatic film "We Are Marshall," which opens next month (starring Matthew McConaughey and Matthew Fox), this documentary is being released to tell the true story through archival footage, interviews with principals, etc. This is about the Marshall University college football team (in Huntington, W.Va.) that lost 36 members in a plane crash. The emphasis, however, is on how the university and the town rose up to rebuild the sports program and the spirit of the grief-stricken community. Extras: Full frame, featurettes • THE HISTORY CHANNEL ULTIMATE COLLECTIONS: WORLD WAR II (History Channel, 1995-2006, 10 discs, b/w and color, $59.95). These shows from the History cable channel cover various aspects of World War II in insightful, informative documentaries, utilizing vintage footage and modern perspectives, with episodes on the war in Europe and the Pacific, episodes about General MacArthur, Okinawa, war planes and the Nuremberg trials, as well as the two-part "Great Blunders." Extras: Full frame, 27 episodes, featurettes (on "Blunders" only); also available in various individual sets, $14.95-$44.95 • WALT DISNEY’S FUNNY FACTORY WITH GOOFY, VOLUME 3 (Disney, 1937-61, $14.99). • WALT DISNEY’S FUNNY FACTORY WITH HUEY, DEWEY & LOUIE, VOLUME 4 (Disney, 1938-53, $14.99). More great old classic Disney cartoons, including some classics: "Clock Cleaners," "Goofy’s Glider," "Sea Scouts" and "Don’s Fountain of Youth." Show the kids what really good Disney cartoon shorts are like. Extras: Full frame, seven cartoons ("Goofy"), eight cartoons ("Huey") |
