Shepherd Derrial Book (Ron Glass)

Book came aboard the Serenity at Persephone, telling Kaylee he had come from Southdown Abbey and wanted to "walk the world a while." Paying for his passage with real fruit - a rare thing for the crew - Book’s spiritual nature is a marked contrast to the grittier nature of the crew.

Veteran actor and Evansville, Ind., native Ron Glass is probably best known for his role as Det. Ron Harris on the comedy series Barney Miller. His television career spans more than three decades, including guest appearances on such other classic shows as Sanford and Son, All in the Family, Maude, Good Times, Hawaii 5-0, Hart to Hart, The Bob Newhart Show and Murder, She Wrote.

His more recent television roles include turns on The Practice, Friends, Jack & Jill, Star Trek: Voyager and The Education of Max Bickford. He also has done voice-over work for the animated series Rugrats.

Glass studied acting and literature at the University of Evansville (Ind.). After graduation he sought acting work at Minneapolis’ famed Guthrie Theatre. He spent four years there, then worked in several repertory companies before arriving in Los Angeles in 1972.
