Although it may be quite popular among the Geek community, the cult sci-fi series "Firefly" and the follow-up film "Serenity" weren’t around for very long. Now the series may be getting a new lease on life in the gaming world, with news that it will become an MMO title. MMO tech company Multiverse managed to option the "Firefly" rights from Fox. Fox Licensing vice-president, Adam Kline, commented, "We believe Multiverse can deliver an experience that will remain true to the original series, while enabling a whole new level of personal involvement for fans." A release window of 2008 has already been given, and the gameplay and world is meant to be a mix of Star Wars Galaxies and Although "Firefly" and "Serenity" were cult hits, I think the world may struggle as an MMO title. Sure, it will have its core fan base, but MMO titles need to tap into the mainstream market in order to survive, or really appeal to a niche and keep expanding it like Eve Online has managed to do. I’m sure Multiverse will strive to achieve the right balance, but with World of Warcraft continuing to dominate it is hard to see how the title can become a massive hit. |
