From Thefutoncritic.com Futon Critic true with an SOS sent to save Eliza’s showBy Brice Jones Saturday 15 May 2004, by Webmaster Save My Show: ’Tru Calling’ I have written this in support of Fox’s “Tru Calling”. In my opinion, Tru Calling is a great success for Fox, in the fact that it has put the network on the map on Thursday nights, as far as a scripted series is concerned, for the first time in years. Beyond that, Tru Calling is an exceptional show, noting how they manage to take what some would consider “the exact same formula” episode in and episode out, and put a fresh spin on it. The characters have a good deal of dimension, you can never truly tell everything anyone is thinking, and the next episode opens up more about them, keeping you entertained. And I must say, once the producers decided to include Jason Priestley in the series, I was not amused. I didn’t think it was right at all to interrupt the flow of the series with a new character so late in the season, especially one played by an actor noted for a teeny-bop role. But it seemed the character Jack Harper had a purpose, one slowly revealed, all to deliver a climactic end to the season. Tru Calling has done a marvelous job of separating these actors from their popular characters, Eliza Dushku once being touted as one of the greatest villains on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, while Jason Priestley was hailed as a stand-up-guy on “Beverly Hills 90210”, the show successfully reversing both of their roles. And in closing, Tru Calling has all the elements to make for a wonderful second season. Tru will be competing with Jack over the lives of innocents, while her greatest enemy is under the tutelage of her own father, who was responsible for her mother’s death. Next season is due to be far darker, and bring the actors and writers involved to a new level. Let’s all show Fox the gem they have in their hands, and preserve Tru Calling. |
