From Elitestv.com HB... Oh no not again - HBO’s domination of the Emmy nominations (buffy mention)By Tara Meehan Monday 19 July 2004, by Webmaster It’s that time of year again. Time for television blue ribbon panelists, i.e. The Powers that Wanna Be, to predictably honor and smooch up to those small screen network programs and actors they deem worthy of gold. Not surprisingly HBO, quickly becoming the New York Yankees of the television world, led the nomination pool with 21 nods going to Angels in America, the epic miniseries centered around the AIDS epidemic in New York City, Al Pacino’s cropped grey hair and Emma Thompson flying through the air and 20 nominations going to the Sopranos, the mob hit about an overweight, paranoid Don who flirts with his therapist and barely tolerates his immediate and professional families. With all due respect to HBO and its empire of incredibly entertaining and talent rich series, isn’t enough enough? Granted, with the growing onslaught of ’reality television’ infiltrating the airwaves it is difficult to rationally argue against consistently praising the Sex & the City’s of the world. Still, one can not dismiss how easily Emmy judges ignore other fantastic television shows. As an unapologetic Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan, the mind boggles at how this character rich and philosophically challenging tour de force was scoffed at year after year by Emmy. Other entertaining shows facing the same non-nominated fate are the WB’s defunct Angel and Showtime’s, Dead Like Me. While I don’t think HBO should be punished for mainstream television’s lack of imagination, I do believe the nominating committee should meritoriously diversify its selections. Unless of course, Tony Soprano is threatening to have them whacked. 8 Forum messages |
