I Do!By Andrew Gans Tuesday 17 August 2004, by Webmaster Harry Groener and Diana Canova will star in a one-night-only presentation of I Do! I Do! for Los Angeles’ Reprise! Broadway’s Best series. The Harvey Schmidt-Tom Jones musical, based on the play The Fourposter, will be presented Aug. 23 at 8 PM at UCLA’s Freud Playhouse. Groener and Canova will star as, respectively, Michael and Agnes, a couple whose lives are explored in the two-person musical. Steven Smith and Darryl Archibald will be the evening’s musical directors. I Do! I Do!, originally presented on Broadway in 1966 with Mary Martin and Robert Preston, begins with the wedding day of Michael and Agnes and covers 50 years of their lives. The score produced the standard "My Cup Runneth Over." Reprise! Producing Director Marcia Seligson said in a statement, "We are delighted to bring this well received production of Schmidt and Jones’ I Do! I Do! to our audiences. This will be a wonderful evening of song from the writers of The Fantasticks and 110 in the Shade and how lucky we are that Harry and Diana will be able to share this musical treasure with us." Harry Groener is a three-time Tony Award nominee for his work in Crazy for You, Oklahoma! and Cats and has also been seen on Broadway in Harrigan and Hart, Oh Brother!, Is There Life After High School?, Sleight of Hand and in the title role of Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George. Groener also portrayed the hapless Ralph in NBC’s "Dear John," and his other TV appearances include "Mad About You," "Murphy Brown," "Just Shoot Me," "Home Improvement," "Quantum Leap," "Cupid," "Buddy Faro," "Star Trek: The Next Generation," "Star Trek: Voyager" and the recurring role of The Mayor on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Groener’s film credits number Amistad, Patch Adams, Dance With Me and Buddy Boy. Best known for her portrayal of Corinne Tate in the sitcom "Soap," Diana Canova has appeared on Broadway in They’re Playing Our Song and the revival of Company. She appeared in such regional productions as I Wrote a Letter to My Love, Thumbs, A Little Night Music and Putting It Together.
