Fantastic Four

By Joss Whedon and Olivier Coipel

When I was just starting out at IGN, I had the opportunity to interview Joss Whedon. Geeking out aside, what I remember most about the interview was the simple fact that Whedon had an idea for a Fantastic Four storyline. He was shifting away from writing mainstream Marvel comic books, but had he not...

For some of you, the very notion that Whedon has an idea for Marvel’s First Family is enough to make you drool. That was pretty much my reaction. For those of you not familiar with the man’s work, let’s just say that Whedon has an unparalleled ability to write engaging , dynamic groups of characters. Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly, arguably Whedon’s most popular and acclaimed accomplishments, are fundamentally stories about strangers banding together to form a family unit. The Fantastic Four are relatively unique in their identity as a superhero family, making the fit about as obvious as you can get.

In terms of artists, Olivier Coipel can do no wrong in my book. Coipel really stretched his legs with J. Michael Straczynski’s Thor series, and I’ve love to see him take his designs and great characterization skills to the next level with FF. If Coipel managed to stun me with his depictions of Africa, Asgard and the Midwest, I couldn’t even begin to imagine what he’d do for alternate realities or dimensions. Plus his Dr. Doom kicks ass.
