If Joss Whedon directed Star Wars Episode VII

Saturday 19 January 2013, by Webmaster

There are few things in this world that I care more about than "Star Wars" and the work of Joss Whedon. So when Whedon recently admitted he briefly hoped to direct the next "Star Wars" installment, I couldn’t help but take notice.

I was anxious about contemplating the union of my two greatest pop culture passions — I thought it might make my brain explode. But I did, and it didn’t.

These were my reflections on the matter, transcribed for your reading pleasure:

If Joss Whedon directed "Star Wars," he would figure out how to please the old fans while attracting and engaging new ones. He’d cast actors that can actually act (and probably throw in a few Whedonverse vets for good measure). He’d whip up a tasty blend of action, drama, romance and humor. He’d make sure that the dialogue was so much better than the ridiculous kiddie-crap we’ve endured in the previous films.

If Joss Whedon directed "Star Wars" he would become as passionate about the project as I am, and that would make it great. But, alas, it is not to be — not for "Episode VII" anyway. Whedon’s Marvel duties (and a "Dr. Horrible" sequel) require his full attention.

Of course that doesn’t necessarily mean that the next "Star Wars" film won’t be awesome. After all, Joss Whedon isn’t our only hope — there are plenty of filmmakers who can handle the task. So I will leave my combustive thoughts behind and look forward to 2015.

Impossible to see, the future is. But I am not afraid.
