Is Buffy set to upstage Dr. Frank-N-Furter ?

Slay some vampires; sing a little song, get down tonight?

Image I had a chance to chat with Robert McKeown from Shinny Objects recently about the upcoming "Once More With Feeling: A Late Night Buffy the Vampire Slayer Audience Participation Event " this week and the battle to bring it to Sacramento.

The Rundown: Sacramento will have a "Once More with Feeling" audience participation event on March 16. It’s a late night extension of the Shiny Object and Fools Foundation art gallery regular screening series which usually consists of a Friday evening screening of an independent film or doc at 7 PM.

Michael: So this is being done outside of the Buffy Sing-Along tour?

Robert: The tour hasn’t even launched yet. When we first booked it, I wasn’t even aware of the pending tour and it’s my understanding they are typically looking for larger venues than our 100-seat capacity space, we are the underdog when it comes this this type of thing.

Michael: Will this be 100% the same tour people will see at those larger venues when it launches?

Robert: I was interested in holding this audience participation event, which will borrow some of the conventions established under the Sing-Along, for the fans that would have interest in the communal experience along with the audience participation component.

Michael: Working outside the system isn’t necessarily surprising for the Shiny Object though is it?

Robert: We’re kind of renegades. We strive to provide a theatrical experience outside of the traditional theater environment and screen titles that wouldn’t normally play in corporate chain theaters today. With the Sing-Along concept, the appeal was entirely about the prospect for folks to have fun with it. We hope to have at least some people dressing up and getting everyone to participate. Hopefully folks will come in with their own ideas too - we’re big believers in localization.

Michael: Part of the experience with Rocky Horror is the chaos of flying objects, do you plan to curb that?

Robert: We will discourage airborne objects, though - it’s not Rocky Horror after all.

Michael: Probably for the best; flying wooden stakes is probably a huge insurance nightmare.

Robert: Exactly.

Michael: Thanks for taking the time to talk to us here at IESB.NET.

Robert: My pleasure.
