Looks like astronomers have found a fall-back plan in case greenhouse gases get to be a bit too stifling here on ‘ol home Earth - a planet outside our solar system that is potentially habitable. The planet is just the right size, with Earth-like temperatures, and might even have water in liquid form. In galactic terms, it’s relatively nearby at just 120 trillion miles away. Too long for day trips I’m afraid. But rather than wait for global warming to make Bucks County a beachfront to the Atlantic Ocean, I’m calling first dibs on the beach there. We’ll worry what to call the planet later. One final thought. TV writer and director Joss Whedon is started to sound like a psychic. He began every episode of his ill-fated “Firefly” series with the phrase: “Here’s how it is: Earth got used up, so we terraformed a whole new galaxy of Earths, some rich and flush with new technologies, some not so much.” |
