One of the things that not a lot of people know who are outside of the business is that when you begin a television series, they essentially give you enough money to-using the ball club analogy-get yourself a pitcher and a batter and a good second baseman in your series staff. And then the rest of them are just farm players, and you hope that you’re going to at least have three people that can play ball. That’s why when you look at most television series, at the end of the first season they fire everyone. They did that on “Buffy.” They did a lot of that on “Lost.” “Smallville” cleaned house. It’s just very hard in your first year to find a staff that has the same vision, because there is no vision at the very beginning. It’s just the pilot and the guy, but Tim had a very unique idea. He knew how hard it is to stay on the air and how things get yanked after three episodes, and his concept was that instead of building a ball club, why not buy the Yankees? (...) |
