In the new SFX Worlds Of Whedon special, Joss Whedon reveals why it’s painful to even contemplate the idea of making a Serenity 2:

While it wasn’t a box office barn burner, Serenity is now something of a hit on DVD and Blu-ray, which makes the possibility of a sequel seem more likely. Alas, Whedon only shakes his head at the prospect: “As far as Firefly is concerned, that will always be unfinished business. Serenity was a Band-Aid on a sucking flesh wound. I think every day about the scenes that I’ll never get to shoot and how badass they were. It’s nice to know that people still care about Firefly but it’s actual grief that I feel. It’s not something you get over, it’s just something you learn to live with.”

    This movie needs to happen for us fans. When Firefly was a tv show and got canceled, I felt this loss in my heart, like someone just took my home away. I always imagined myself living on that wonderful ship in outer space with that awesome crew. I love the tv show and the movie. The thought of a Serenity 2 coming out made my day until I saw the answer no due to people wanted a Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie. The only thing about that is the tv show ended the way it should have ended. It was done, finished. I’m still a big fan of Buffy and Angel, but the thought of another Serenity movie that put a smile on my face and warmed my heart. So I still have hope for another Serenity movie to come out and I hope it gets a chance to. It would be nice to see the crew of Serenity again.
