Joss Whedon and Fabio Moon’s beautifully overcooked sci-fi "Battle of the Bands" is easily the best webcomic to come out from an established comic-book publishing house... ever. Lead singer Dandelion is a typically plucky Whedon heroine, and lovable whether her desires are straightforward (she may have had her little heart broken when she lost the competition on page 2, but SHE WILL CHEER THE VICTOR, BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT GOOD SPORTS DO!) or incomprehensible (what on Earth did Vikings ever do to her?). From the first page to the last, Whedon and Moon have fun with the form and with storytelling tropes in ways that have rarely been tried since the heyday of Mad Magazine— with none of the now-tired, formulaic aspects you’ll find in the Mad of today. To tell you much more would spoil it. Just give it a spin.
