Geeksix.com The AvengersJoss Whedon - "The Avengers" Movie - Geeksix.com casts The AvengersMonday 26 April 2010, by Webmaster Now that the dust has settled from the news going around that Joss Whedon is set to direct Marvel’s The Avengers, and that it is quite possible he will pulling rewrite duties on the movie and on the upcoming Captain America movie, let the speculation begin.Avengers What speculation is that? Why who would be the perfect Whedonverse people to cast of course. Now being honest with myself I think it is foregone conclusion that most casting here will be decided by the studio, not Joss himself. Heck I think most of the lead players in this game already have signed on the dotted line. But in the end, Joss loves using his mates and we know he does, so we all love to play the fantasy casting game. If we had our choice from the Whedonverse… Iron Man Robert Downey Jr or… Adam Baldwin? Robert Downey JrAdam BaldwinI wanted to try to swing a goatee’d Adam Baldwin into the role. Sadly Tony Stark is suppose to be some super genius along with being a sarcastic wise ass. So add in that little component and I will have to go with … Baldwin it is! If you harken back to the younger years of Adam and remember him as a sharp shooting Air Force officer in Independence Day, you can see it happening. And yes, I might admit that my bias for Baldwin stepped in here just a titch. tony stark 2 Thor Chris Hemsworth or… Marc Blucas? Chris HemsworthMarc BlucasWhat? We need a blond Norse god who controls thunder and has muscles upon muscles. Why the Whedonverse is so full of those! Or maybe none at all. Blond brings in images of Alan Tudyk but his comedic genius gets in the way of the Thunder God. David Boreanaz may now sport the necessary girth, but lacks the blond lockes of Odinson. And as much as it pains me to write the name I have chosen, I hereby name he who was Riley, Marc Blucas, as Thor Odinson. Hey, better than me naming Adam (he came with his own armor). Captain America Chris Evans or… Charlie Weber? Chris EvansCharlie WeberMaybe I spoke too soon with Blucas. Because now I have yet another blond, more than average muscled, all American. Sadly Marc also fits that bill. But its not my fault Joss doesn’t like muscle men. Some see Cap as the center point of The Avengers. And naturally that causes fans to migrate towards Nathan Fillion. Now I love Fillion as an actor with all the rest, but he doesn’t fit the role for me. Cap is too idealistic to take advantage of Fillion’s ability for witty banter. So it seems that most of the top shelf actors are out with this one. But what about Ben? Yes Ben. Glory’s better half. He even comes with the chiseled jaw need for Cap. Anyone know if he has done anything over the past decade or so? Bruce Banner Edward Norton or… Fran Kranz? Edward NortonFran KranzWell we already know that big green muscular behemoths can be portrayed care of with CGI. That is a good thing as they tend not to exist in our plane of reality. That just means the we need the geeky counterpart. And if there is one thing the Whedonverse has enough of, its geeks. Myy thoughts drifted towards two people in particular, Fran Kranz and Tom Lenk. And while juggling those two back and forth, I had to go with he who showed the best convincing portrayal of a scientist. Congrats Fran. But to be honest? Either makes a better Banner than Eric Bana. Black Widow Scarlett Johansson or… Eliza Dushku? Scarlett JohanssenEliza DushkuAnyone need a femme fatale who can tote a big gun and kick a little ass? Plus there is a need to get dirty every once in a while and wear some skin tight black leather. Only one person fits that bill and fits it pretty darn closely and that would be Dushku. She was trained for the roll between Faith and Echo. No objections from me. Nick Fury Sam Jackson or… D.B. Woodside? Sam Jacksonnf DB WoodsideIn the funny pages, Fury was a crotchety, old white man. He was even infamously immortalized by a certain David Hasselhoff in his own movie back in the early 1990s. However in the Marvel Ultimate Universe and on the silver screen he is a bald black man. J. August Richards is the first one who pops into mind. And he just sticks around. So there you have it. Wait another image is coming through…D.B. Woodside. Yes. Yes. It is all clear, Woodside dons the eye patch. My only question is where is Hawkeye? I do know that Fillion is the perfect Clint Barton. Witty, condescending and the ability to buck authority. Yes sir. Forget trying to stick him in as Cap, it isn’t in the cards. And that cute as a button Amy Acker would make for a perfect Janet van Dyne. And that is the world of typecasting my friends. |
