Mtv.com The AvengersJoss Whedon - "The Avengers" Movie - Assembling the AvengersWednesday 14 April 2010, by Webmaster Joss Whedon is reportedly in final negotiations to direct "The Avengers." Over the years, several superheroes have passed through the halls of Avengers Mansion. Likewise, several different actors have gone through the Whedonverse — and we all know how Whedon likes to utilize those same actors time and time again. You can see where this is going, can’t you? Let’s have some fun here — if Whedon were to call upon some of his old friends to fight alongside the core Avengers, he could certainly assemble a worse squad than this! David Boreanaz as Hank Pym Hank Pym is a brilliant scientist capable of unfathomable rage, a balance that "Angel" leading man David Boreanaz could handle with ease. Under Whedon’s supervision, Boreanaz regularly flipped the switch between Angel the charismatic vampire hero and Angelus the crazy vampire sadist — there’s no question that he could bring out those character flaws again in Whedon’s vision of "The Avengers." Amy Acker as The Wasp If Boreanaz played Pym, it would follow that Sarah Michelle Gellar would portray Janet Van Dyne, the size-changing Avenger known as The Wasp — but I think the role is actually better suited for Amy Acker based on the variety of characters she’s played under Whedon’s leadership, particularly Whiskey on "Dollhouse." Acker’s character was at once a sympathetic sweetheart, a battered victim and a thorough badass. If she can conjure up that same combination for Wasp, she would be a perfect fit for the role. Nathan Fillion as Hawkeye Although he would have made for a wonderful Hal Jordan in "Green Lantern," Nathan Fillion could do equally well as Hawkeye, the Avengers’ eagle-eyed archer. Fillion has all of the swagger and charisma you could possibly want out of Clint Barton — heck, he practically perfected the role as Mal Reynolds in "Firefly" and "Serenity." Honestly, I can’t see Fillion missing the mark if cast as Clint. Anthony Stewart Head as Vision I imagine that any Marvel Studios version of Vision would require significant motion capture and computer generated effects. If that’s the case, I think that Anthony Stewart Head, who delivered a memorable turn as Rupert Giles on "Buffy: The Vampire Slayer," would be a perfect fit for Vision’s voice and even his physical likeness. He spent several years providing vampire intelligence to Buffy and her pals — there’s no reason he can’t perform the same function as the Avengers’ resident android! Alan Tudyk & Eliza Dushku as Quicksilver & The Scarlet Witch Although it’s tempting to go with the obvious James Marsters and Sarah Michelle Gellar combination on this one, don’t be so quick to look past Alan Tudyk and Eliza Dushku. These two had a very bizarre, almost incestuous-feeling relationship as Alpha and Echo on "Dollhouse" — and, well, that’s pretty much exactly what you want out of Pietro and Wanda. From Movieline.com : Which Joss Whedon Characters Resemble Members of The Avengers? The more I mull it over, the more Joss Whedon makes sense as the director of Marvel’s high-profile feature film adaptation of The Avengers. His time in the director’s chair isn’t extensive, but neither was Jon Favreau’s before helming Iron Man, and Whedon’s got plenty more geek cred and comic book experience than Favreau ever did. In fact, once you start to really examine Whedon’s television work, you might see that his characters aren’t so dissimilar from the superheroes who will be populating The Avengers. Let’s take a look at who resembles who: Iron Man :: Mal, Firefly An ability to mumble pithy comments under his breath? Check. A heart of gold that sometimes gets in the way of his money-making schemes? Check. A gift for looking great in red and a love of traveling through the air? Check and check. The Hulk :: Willow, Buffy the Vampire Slayer You wouldn’t like either of these two when they’re angry. Unfortunately, their tendency to transform at the slightest provocation makes their fellow heroes wary. Captain America :: Captain Hammer, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog Have you ever suspected that under Captain America’s goody-goody exterior lies a shamelessly self-congratulatory inner life (and a love of showtunes)? Black Widow :: Echo, Dollhouse Truth be told, Black Widow resembles any Eliza Dushku character created by Whedon: sexy, dangerous, and willing to flip from bad to good depending on the hour. Thor :: Angel, Angel Buffy Summers and Jane Foster should really grab coffee sometime. They’ve got a lot in common, as each fell in love with a big hunk of a man who eventually revealed himself to be a superpowered, super-ancient immortal. Both Thor and Angel are grappling with a transformational curse: the arrogant Thor is made to live as a human by his father, while Angel is the subject of a gypsy incantation that removes his humanity upon attaining true happiness. Nick Fury :: Giles, Buffy the Vampire Slayer Did you think we’d liken Fury to the eye-patched Xander? The two of them may have similar taste in facial accessories, but Nick Fury fills a role much like Buffy’s Giles does, dropping in and out of the narrative and recruiting whatever superheroes or potential Slayers are necessary for the next threat. |
