MYMOVIES: DVD winner from July 13 (seth green mention)

Thursday 13 July 2006, by Webmaster

Congratulations to Dwayne D. Willis of Russell, Ky., who was chosen in a random drawing from all of today’s entries. Dwayne will receive "Final Destination 3 (Widescreen 2-Disc Special Edition)," which is released July 25. With only eight entries this week, you’ve got a great chance to win next week’s prize, "The Benchwarmers." A trio of guys try and make up for missed opportunities in childhood by forming a three-player baseball team to compete against standard little league squads.

The contest is limited to participants 18 and older.

WINNER: ’Darkstar’ underappreciated

The most underappreciated film of the past 40 years happens to be my most favorite of all time.

The movie, "Darkstar" (2006), is John Carpenter’s first big-screen film. It followed the adventure of the interplanetary bomber and her crew through what would be their final mission. Their mission was simple: Destroy planets. It never explained to me why they were doing this, but being nine years old the first time seeing it at the Corral Drive-in, I really didn’t care. I just liked the cool special effects, which were cool for 1973. When I watched it again some 25 years later, I began understanding the film’s deeper meaning.

The creepiest part of the movie was when the bomb started quoting the first chapter of Genesis, ending with "Let there be light", and detonating itself, destroying itself, the ship and the remaining crew, except for one astronaut, a surfer, which had been blown out an airlock just moments before the "God bomb" ended its existence.

The final scene was the most humorous. The surfer took a piece of scrap of the now destroyed Darkstar and surfed into the planet’s atmosphere. Enjoying for one last time, something that he enjoyed so much on Earth.

Steve Martin, favorite actor

My favorite actor would have to be Steve Martin. His physically comedy and quick wit keep me laughing throughout all his movies. I think the first time I ever saw Steve Martin was in "The Jerk" (1979), a hilarious slapstick movie. Some other Steve Martin films that may be familiar include "Mixed Nuts" (1994), "The Man with Two Brains" (1983), "Three Amigos" (1986), "Roxanne" (1987), "Novocain" (*2001), "Father of the Bride" (1991) and "Cheaper by the Dozen" (2003). I like that most of his movies are funny yet clean, I can sit down with the kids for a movie that we all can enjoy. All in all, I think Steve Martin is ....one wild and crazy guy!

’The Devil Wears Prada’ entertaining

"The Devil Wears Prada" (2006) with Meryl Streep is a very entertaining movie. Prada tells the story of an evil and overbearing boss named Miranda Priestly. Miranda is a fashion editor who is the boss from hell. She is the type of boss that we all should fear having. It seems that Miranda thrives on making everyone around her miserable. Miranda delights in keeping her newest employee Andrea on edge. Andrea fresh out of college with no "fashion sense" quickly learns how to handle Miranda and actually get a few steps ahead of the evil boss. After she learns how to handle Miranda, Andrea decides to cut herself free from this fast-paced world of fashion to pursue her passion of writing. This is a movie you can take your family to and not be embarrassed by what you might see.

’Rat Race’ one of three favorites

"Rat Race" (2001) — "Rat Race" is a hilarious comedy packed with adventure. A billionaire casino owner gives contestants a chance to win a $2 million prize by racing from Las Vegas to New Mexico. This all-star comedy cast includes: Whoopi Goldberg, John Cleese, Seth Green, Jon Lovitz and Kathy Najimy. It’s a definite "must-see."

"Ocean’s Eleven" (2001) — A cast including George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon cannot go wrong. This action-packed adventure will leave you on the edge of your seats. If they succeed, the payoff is $150 million. It’s full of constant twists and turns. You will never guess what happens next. A masterpiece by director, Steven Soderbergh.

"The Sum of All Fears" (2002) — Terrorists plan to provoke a nuclear war between the United States and Russia by detonating an atomic weapon at a football game. CIA Agent, Jack Ryan (Ben Affleck) follows a dangerous trail to conclude the sum of all fears. Ben Affleck and Morgan Freeman give amazing performances in this exhilarating adventure.

’The Terminal’ underappreciated

In my opinion, the movie "The Terminal" (2004) is the most underappreciated film. Some have said it is the worst movie Steven Spielberg has ever made.

First of all, I think too much was expected simply because Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta-Jones were in the film, as well as the fact it had an amazing director. The point is, everyone should just take it for what it is, a "feel good" movie.

As we know, Viktor’s small country is in total chaos, but even with these problems, he is a survivor. There are times the movie makes you want to laugh, other times you want to cry! This movie has charm, which is hard to find in many movies today. This movie shows us simple lessons in kindness, trust and survival. Viktor becomes friends with everyone and though he has his share of problems, in the end, everything works out! I suppose it is just a good movie that I have heard critics say was too "melodramatic" or just too long, but my family enjoyed every moment!

If I could only describe the movie with one word, I suppose that movie would be "determination", and don’t we all need a bit more of that?

Favorite ’Girls and Guns’ Series

Like girls and guns action? Check Japan’s nine "Zero Woman" movies about Rei, Agent Zero. I just found No. 1 (1974) with Miki Sugimoto.

I own No. 2 (1995) with sexy Natsuki Ozawa. Her lover is a bad cop. She catches a Chinese robber, and the cop shoots her thigh. He sells bonds the man stole to gangsters, whom Rei kills. In the finale, Rei and the cop shoot each other. He dies, but a compact saves Rei from his bullet.

I also own No. 3 with beautiful Kumiko Takeda. Rei wants to resign. Five gang leaders whom she is assigned to kill send a killer after her. He falls in love with her, and they team up against the gang. Then, her boss kills her new lover. She shoots her boss, but he wears a bullet-proof vest.

’The Hills Have Eyes’ good movie

Peter Locke and Alexandre Aja remade this Wes Craven classic, "The Hills Have Eyes" (2006). Craven also made "A Nightmare on Elm Street" (1984) and "Scream" (1996).

At first, I thought this movie was going to be a joke, but I liked it. The Mutants made this movie look so real, especially Lizard (Robert Joy). This movie was sick and very gory, my kinda of movie.

I really liked the character Aaron Stanford played, I can’t remember if I have seen this actor before, but he brought this character to life. You almost felt sorry for him. Doug’s mother and father-in-law and wife are shot to death by horrible creatures and his child is taken.

Then he starts out on his own on a rescue mission by his side is a loyal companion.

Doug faces these Mutants head on along with his dog, he kills them all.

Ruby (Laura Ortiz) helped Doug save his child. Then Doug, Bobby and Brenda survived this nightmare, oh, yeah, the dog, too.

’Cars’ family movie

We went to see "Cars" (2006) the first week it came out. My whole family loved it. My kids want everything they see that has "Cars" on it. It’s one of the best family movies I have seen recently. The movie is about Lightning McQueen. He’s on his way to California for a race when he falls out of the back of the truck he’s riding in, and ends up in a little town called Radiator Springs. He tears up the road and the sheriff won’t let him leave the town until he fixes it, so he’s stuck there a long time.

My favorite "Car" is Tow Mater, he’s very funny. "Cars" is a great family movie.
