Slashfilm.com Men Kissing In Film : Hot or Not ? (sarah michelle gellar mention)RD Ross Sunday 23 October 2005, by Webmaster As a whole, society has seen woman on woman action as hot. The stereotypical male fantasy is a hot girl kissing another hot girl, with maybe a little groping going on. Evidence, Cruel Intentions (1998), when Sarah Michelle Gellar kisses Selma Blair, won "Best Kiss" at the MTV Movie Awards. When you think about it, though, the hottest same-sex kisses have been between men. This occured to me as I watched a preview for Brokeback Mountain, where Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaall play secret lover-cowboys. But is society ready for women to think guys kissing is hot? Personally, the thought of Ledger and Gyllenhaall, two beautiful specimens, kissing passionately, gives me tingles. It’s the same sensation I got in 9th grade when I went to see In & Out. Unlike other girls who swooned after Justin Timberlake, I was going through a big Kevin Kline phase. Odd, yes, but when he kissed Tom Selleck, the scene caused a stir, and not just in the media. In film, women kissing is often portrayed as college girls experimenting with their sexuality. This is seldom true with men, except maybe in Y Tu Mama Tambien. Perhaps the appeal of men kissing is that Hollywood sees it as something deeper, more passionate, not just an experiment. It’s the uncovering of the men’s true selves. And as Keats wrote, "‘Beauty is truth, truth beauty,’ - that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know." (Ode on a Grecian Urn) So, to answer the question, “is society ready to accept male homosexuality as attractive?” I’d say half of us are. The other half is just in denial. 6 Forum messages |
