Michelle Trachtenberg - ’Eurotrip’ Movie - Metropoint.com Interview

Thursday 12 February 2004, by Webmaster

Michelle Trachtenberg, 19, has just scored a part on “Six Feet Under,” completed a dark indie drama and is rehearsing for a movie about an ice princess. But to most fans, she’ll always be Dawn, the cute, snarky kid sister on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Next week, in response, the former child star is out to prove she ’s all grown up - in the best Hollywood way possible.

She appears in “Eurotrip,” a raunchy comedy in which four high school grads head to Prague and other far-flung locales, downing pot brownies, skipping to nude beaches and meeting creepy Italian guys. Trachtenberg wears a string bikini and makes out with exotic dudes - including her on—screen twin brother.

Metro talked to the actress about her career, the un-Dawn like part and about why she ’d rather head to Prague than go to college.

So you make out with your brother in this movie ...

Well, we get drunk off our asses and my brother and I start going at it and then - surprise!

How does this comedy differ from past teen flicks filled with crazy sex jokes?

I want to make sure people know - this is not a sequel. This is raunchy, funny, like “Road Trip.” But the difference between that and this - there’s more character development in this movie. So it’s funnier. You get to laugh at them when they’re eating pot brownies because you know them.

So no sexual relations with pies? How disappointing.

What?!? Brother and sister making out doesn’t do it for you? Alright, I’ll let you know, I personally have a slow-motion sexy bikini scene. That’s the point in the move when the audience realizes she’s a woman.

Yes, on the poster, your breasts are hanging out. How does it feel when they use your sexuality to promote a film?

That’s what the genre is about. The movie is about teen sex and, listen, sex sells. That ’s not breaking news. Now, I didn’t choose the poster. But as long as everyone is having fun....You know, I’m young. I might as well show off while I can.

You ’re 19. Do you see college in your future?

I applied and did my SATs, which were a bitch but I got good scores. I applied to my two top choices and got in. But then I took a year off because I’d like to get into the producing side [of movies ]. It’s good to further your education but if your doing something you love, why put a hold on it?

How are students supposed to choose between studying and running away to Europe?

It ’s wonderful to take a year off before you go to college, or take a year off during. Go party, get it all out of you and then go back to school and focus. Just don’t go to a party school. College is all about responsibility.

Speaking of which, was there any truth to the rumors about you continuing with “Buffy ” after it was canceled?

I really enjoyed my time on “Buffy ” because it was my favorite show. But I didn’t see myself continuing as Dawn because I like to have diversity in my roles. A lot of people are like: “Oh my God! Little Dawn grew up!” And as much as I love you guys, suck it up. I love “Buffy ” but I felt like every year, my character got younger as I got older. The scripts even had me speaking grammatically incorrect. So I had to do something else. Besides, the show is over. If you miss it, get the DVDs.

Sounds like she is a bit ungrateful to the fans of Buffy (who without she would be a blip on the hollywood radar) Annoying when people you support dont appreciate it!!!

Actually, the internet’s reaction to Michelle’s new role probably explains why she sounds frustrated in that interview. A lot of fans have been getting on her case, for taking on a role that isn’t an innocent, naive ingenue, like Dawn was. Some are even accusing Michelle of being a bad person, just because she’s playing a more wild character.

For Michelle, it’s got to be frustrating to have people wanting her to perpetually play roles that are similar to Dawn - and to have people actually bad-mouth her for it, has got to hurt. I think that explains why Michelle sounds a bit defensive during that last question.

Her new role isn’t even all that outrageous. But because some people perpetually view her as Dawn, they’re being overly critical of her Eurotrip role. Which is why she seems a bit on edge.

I think it is good she is exploring new roles; but stil think she should remember the people who gave her those opportunities!!!

I was looking forward to watching the film but I’m not going to bother now if that is her attitude to the fans!!

I’ve got to agree with Sandra, some of the stuff people have said about Michelle because she dared to *gasp* wear a bikini in EuroTrip was pretty bad, I can see why Michelle would be frustrated about that.

She’s not saying she hates Buffy, or Dawn, or Buffy fans, just that, at 18, she didn’t want to keep on playing a role she started when she was 15. I can understand that, people change a lot in those years. And, while I loved Dawn, she must have been a frustrating charcter to portray at times, either ignored or mishandled for much of the last 2 years of the show.

Most everything I’ve read about Michelle has said she’s a pretty nice person. Now, because of one question in an interview she’s ungrateful to her fans? That seems pretty unfair.

I’d love it if Michelle would play Dawn again, both because I like the character and because none of her other projects iterest me much. But it’ll take a lot more to get me to believe this "Michelle’s a bad person, ungrateful to her fans" thing.

The thing is, I don’t think Michelle meant to direct those comments at Buffy fans in general. I think she was referring to certain fans, in specific.

Because when they saw the Eurotrip promotional material, a lot of fans indeed reacted by saying stuff like, "Oh my God! - what happened to Dawn? - she’s all grown up!" And after that, derogatory or overly-critical comments were made about Michelle.

So I think she’s saying that those kind of fans are the ones who need to ’suck it up’. I don’t think she meant to insult Buffy fans in general...

    She’s way not 19, being born on October 11th, 1985 : she’s still 18 ;)

i find her last comment incredibly ungrateful and rude, without buffy she would have been the "little girl from harriet the spy" i thinks he was a much nicer person before, i thinks she is trying to get into the Shannen Doherty image now, lol.

Personally, I agree with a point someone made a few posts below - I’ve read quite a bit about Michelle, and she’s always been described as a really nice person. So it’ll take more than this interview for me to view her as ’ungrateful’. During her recent Sharon Osbourne Show appearance, she was as sweet and humble as she’s always been - and despite her new movie role, she noted how she loved her time on Buffy.

So it’ll take more than this Metropoint interview to convince me she’s ungrateful. And as I’ve said down below, I think she has valid reasons for being frustrated with certain fan reactions to her new role. Some people have been actively insulting her for not taking on a movie role that’s not like Dawn. In response to those people, she’s pointing out that the show is now over - so if they only like seeing her as Dawn, then by all means, they can buy the DVD’s.

And it’s not like she’s given up on playing innocent characters. For those who like seeing her play those type of roles, she’s doing a Disney movie called ’Ice Princess’. The girl is trying to add some diversity to her roles. But a lot of fans are yelling at her to only play characters that are like Dawn. I think that would try the patience of even the nicest person.
