Nominate Whedonverse Alumni for SyFy Genre Awards

Tuesday 15 May 2007, by Webmaster

More than 1 million people have cast ballots over the last seven years to support their favorite actors, television series and movies. Now it’s your chance to have a say in what gets nominated for the upcoming 2007 SyFy Genre Awards.

What shows did you like this past year? What actor caught your eye? What movie did you cancel all your plans to go see?

The SyFy Genre Awards Nominating Committee is working right now to put together a list of nominees that fans will be able to vote on once per day for 30 days from June 25 to July 25. Past winners have included the likes of Patrick Stewart, Ben Browder, Claudia Black and Daniel Radcliffe. Now it’s up to you to share with the nominating committee who you think should be nominated.

All you have to do is drop an e-mail to awards@syfyportal.com, and include who you think should be nominated in any or all the categories. There are 14 categories in the 2007 version of the awards including BEST ACTOR/Television, BEST ACTRESS/Television, BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR/Television, BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS/Television, BEST ACTOR/Movie, BEST ACTRESS/Movie, BEST YOUNG ACTOR, BEST WEB PRODUCTION, BEST WEB SITE, BEST SPECIAL GUEST, BEST EPISODE/Television, BEST SERIES/Television, BEST MOVIE and the GENE RODDENBERRY LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD.

Our nominating criteria are pretty simple. Anything eligible would have to have aired on American television or in American cinemas between June 1, 2006 and May 31, 2007. If a cancelled series had just one or two episodes air beginning June 1, the whole series, and all the actors are eligible.

Our newest category, BEST WEB PRODUCTION, is anything fan-created or made exclusively for the Web by professional producers that has never aired on television. This could include the "Battlestar Galactica" Webisodes, YouTube productions that do not use a majority of material used in television or movies, and even other productions like Star Trek New Voyages. The only requirement is that they were first released between June 1, 2006 and May 31, 2007.

As for BEST WEB SITE, they can be any genre-related Web site not owned or significantly operated by The SyUniverse Group Inc., or any of its staff members, so that excludes SyFy Portal, Rabid Doll, and other sites. If you’re not sure, go ahead and recommend it anyway.

Please just one set of recommendations per e-mail address, due to the volume of e-mail the site receives.

Genre Awards Goes Multimedia

With the addition of Miguel Pagan as SyFy Portal’s Web producer, the 2007 Genre Awards are going to go multimedia, starting with a video presentation of the nominations on June 15. After that, sometime in August, we will put together an entire video presentation for the award winners themselves, with the help of Apple Inc.’s iMovie software and other production software.

For a small select group of people, we will make available the videos of the nominations and the actual video of the awards on a limited edition DVD that will not be sold at all. In fact, the only way you can get a DVD copy is to have it given to you, and we will make some available to randomly selected people who provide suggested nominations before May 15, as well as randomly selected people who vote in the actual genre awards and fill out some demographic information.

Otherwise, the video will be available in smaller aspect ratios both on SyFy Portal, and other video sites like YouTube.

So make your recommendations now at awards@syfyportal.com before May 15, and be sure to state in the e-mail whether you want to be considered for the drawing we do in August for those receiving DVD copies of the awards. If you wish to be considered, please include a name and mailing address (this will not be used for any other purpose, or sold or provided to any other party).

Voting for the SyFy Genre Awards begins June 25. Keep SyFy Portal in your favorites so that you can come back and get the latest updates on the awards as they develop!
