From Newsday.com Off The Wall - Celebs, Animated and Ordinary (alyson hannigan mention)By Diane Werts Saturday 19 February 2005, by Webmaster Off the Wall is on the job, pinpointing peculiarity for your viewing pleasure.... What they do when they don’t: When being famous isn’t what they’re doing, "Celebrity Hobbies" (tonight at 8, DIY) shows you what keeps the stars busy. George Foreman breeds and rides horses, while NFLer Junior Seau goes golfing. Keep watching weekly for Carson Kressley, Penn Jillette and many more. Channel info at www.diytv.com.... Classic TV oasis: When you’re tired of the 87th run of the same "classics" on TBS or TV Land, there’s always GoodLife TV, the digital-satellite channel that ranges a little farther afield. They’ve even got a Jackie Gleason flashback with "The Color Honeymooners" (tonight at 8) in his old Saturday night time slot. They have the 1950s, with "77 Sunset Strip" and "Hawaiian Eye" (Monday at 10 and 11 p.m.), and the 1960s, with "I Spy" (Wednesday at 9 p.m.) and both "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." and "The Girl From U.N.C.L.E." (Wednesday at 10 and 11 p.m.). They run Westerns, both new wave, with "Kung Fu" (Thursday at 9 p.m.), and old, with "Maverick" and "Bronco" (Thursday at 10 and 11 p.m.). They even edge into 1990s quality drama with "I’ll Fly Away" (Sunday at 10 p.m.) and "Homefront" (Sunday at 11 p.m.). Full lineup at www.goodtv.com.... NASCAR overload: Cable’s iN DEMAND digital service offers a free preview of this weekend’s Daytona 500, in addition to the regular Fox broadcast (Sunday at 1 p.m., Fox/5). The digital folks are hyping their paid-subscription NASCAR In Car, which provides a full season of multi-channel coverage where you can switch from car to car views of the action from 21 cameras. (Check with your cable provider.) See demo at www.indemand.com /sports/incar2k4/index.jsp.... The next Whoopi: Don’t get scared! Not the annoyingly ubiquitous I’m-so-cute Whoopi, but the original odd-character-embodying Broadway sensation Whoopi. On "The Sarah Jones Show" (Sunday at 9 p.m., Bravo), the star of Off-Broadway’s "Bridge & Tunnel" plays cops, hip-hoppers, retired ladies and even, via hidden cameras, New York City tourist-desk staffers. Check her out at www.sarahjonesonline.com. ... What, no turkeys?: There’s "Super Chicken," there’s "Cow and Chicken," and now there’s "Robot Chicken" (Sunday at 11:30 p.m., Cartoon), which is actually a completely unrelated addition to late-night’s "adult swim." This lightning-fast cornucopia of stop-motion animation parodies everything from reality TV ("world’s most one-sided fistfights"), to public service (those "your brain on drugs" spots), to the bodily functions of Transformers (don’t let the kiddies watch). There’s even Mr. T’s "X-Files" screen test. Online preview at www.adultswim.com/clips. ... Still sweeps month?: Must be. "Buffy" fave Alyson Hannigan shows up on "Veronica Mars" (Tuesday at 9 p.m., UPN/9), playing the half-sister of rich jerk Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring), whose missing mother is a current case for Kristen Bell’s savvy sleuth. Catch up to this cult fave’s episodes with attitude at www.televisionwithoutpity.com/show.cgi?show=139 .... In case you missed it: The socko miniseries of last summer is back to whet our appetites for a full season this summer. The title characters of "The 4400" (Tuesday-Thursday 9-11 p.m., Sci Fi) are that number of citizens seemingly abducted by aliens during the 20th century - and returned years later with special powers. Among them: "Law & Order’s" Michael Moriarty, "Sex and the City’s" David Eigenberg, "Oz" star Lee Tergesen and "Once and Again" favorite Billy Campbell. More at www.usanetwork.com/series/the4400. Lost Koreans: A ha! We finally find out more about the Korean couple on "Lost" (Wednesday at 8 p.m., ABC/7). The network’s episode description includes eight Asian actor-names joining regulars Daniel Dae Kim and Yunjin Kim. He’s suspected of sabotage, while she reveals something stunning in an episode titled "In Translation." Should we expect subtitles? Catch up at the unofficial fan site www.lost-tv.com.... Nutty for ’Numb3rs’?: They’re even easier for the mental savant profiled in "Brainman" (Wednesday at 8 p.m., Science Channel). Britain’s Daniel Tammet is so obsessed with calculating, he can recite pi down to its 22,500th decimal. Here, he whizzes around the blackjack tables in Vegas and meets the real guy behind "Rain Man." Learn more about Daniel at www.guardian.co.uk/weekend /story/0,,1409903,00.html. . .. Beyond the tube Amazing family race: The eighth edition of CBS’ "The Amazing Race" will feature families of four competing in the global adventure. Wanna be one? The network is screening traditional families (mom, dad, two kids), blended families (newly married with step-siblings), four sisters, four brothers, multi-generational (grandparents and grandchildren), engaged couples with in-laws-to-be, you name it. Kids must be 12 and over. Rules and applications at www.cbs.com /primetime/amazing_race _application. ... |
