Daniel ’Oz’ Osbourne first appeared during the second season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer as the guitar player for the local Sunnydale band, Dingoes Ate My Baby. It was at that gig that Oz first set eyes on Willow Rosenberg and the diminutive musician was immediately intrigued with the sweet red head. Eventually, Willow and Oz became one of the most beloved couples ever featured on the series.

A master of understatement and quiet cool, Oz was initially seen as an unwelcome outsider by fans of the show, especially by those intent on seeing Willow and Xander become a romantic pair. Yet over time, the charming and cerebrally funny Oz stole not only Willow’s heart, but the fans’ too. Oz became further ingrained in the mythos of the series when he was revealed to be a werewolf in the episode, "Phases." Fittingly enough, it was an unceremonious bite from his seemingly harmless young cousin Geordy that turned Oz into a lycanthrope. Oz accepted the change in his typically understated way, more concerned for Willow’s welfare than his own, and someday mastering the elusive E-flat, diminished ninth chord.

While they fared better than most Sunnydale romances, Willow and Oz fell apart once they matriculated at UC Sunnydale. It was there that Oz became drawn to another singer named Veruca. The seductive chanteuse revealed that she too was a werewolf and succeeded in tempting Oz not only to the dark side of his "condition," but into an affair. Willow discovered their tryst and was devastated by his betrayal. Disgusted by his actions and the pain he caused her, Oz left Sunnydale to gain more knowledge and control over his werewolf nature. He returned months later, only to find she had moved on to a new relationship with Tara. Oz and Willow’s emotional final parting was a bittersweet moment for both characters, forever cementing their emotional bond, despite their failed relationship. Oz drove away and though he never appeared again on Buffy or Angel, fans still rank him as one of the most beloved Buffy-verse characters ever.
