Politics Are A Laughing Matter - Alyssa Milano appeared in the convention

Saturday 31 July 2004, by xanderbnd

He’s won over millions of Americans at the Democratic National Convention, and inadvertently, Jon Stewart has become the new political voice of America. Only "Extra" went behind the scenes as the comedian taped his irreverent "Daily Show." Stewart’s political analysis is, to say the least, unique. "In any event of great importance it’s nice to have dancing monkeys, and we provide that service," Stewart joked.

And while the comedian’s jokes constantly received big laughs, Stewart told us he hopes they’ll also make people think. "We’re not spraying fire into the bushes for no reason," he said. "Hopefully we’re able to focus on whatever ire we have."

Stewart also told us he’ll cover the Republican National Convention in New York. And while it remains uncertain whether the Grand Old Party will have as much star power as the Democrats, Stewart said at least one star will be there: "From what I understand, Brooks or Dunn — but not both."

But of course, to young Hollywood, this election is no laughing matter. Dozens of stars came to Boston, stayed at upscale hotels like the Nine Zero, and threw their support behind presidential candidate John Kerry.

At Thursday night’s Rock the Vote party, attendees who included the ever-present Ben Affleck, as well as Leonardo DiCaprio, turned out to watch LL Cool J and John Edwards rap. Over on the convention floor, young stars like Alyssa Milano appeared pumped up by Kerry’s speech.

"Unbelievable," Milano remarked. "I was moved to tears."

John Cusack appeared on "Larry King Live" and said there’s no reason performers can’t be politically active: "We’re citizens. We read. We think. We write."

Young Hollywood certainly appears ready to work and campaign for their candidate all the way to Election Day.
