Steven Spielberg was the producer of "Amazing Stories."

• "Amazing Stories: The Complete First Season" (Universal, 1985-86, not rated, $49.98, four discs). This fantasy-anthology series from Steven Spielberg has the reputation of being something of a disappointment. And it’s true that none of these episodes really soars.

But some are fun, especially the comedies - "The Main Attraction," in which a teenager becomes magnetic; "Mummy Daddy," with an actor and a real live mummy being mistaken for each other; "Hell Toupee," in which a hairpiece comes to life. There’s also a Christmas episode that is sentimental but sweet. None of these episodes are bad, they’re just a bit soft.

Directors include Spielberg, Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese and Burt Reynolds, and the many familiar stars include Drew Barrymore (as a child), Seth Green (as a pre-teen), Kevin Costner, Kiefer Sutherland, Amy Irving, Sid Caesar, Eve Arden, Gordon Jump, Charlie Sheen, Mark Hamill, Tim Robbins, Sam Waterston and John Lithgow, among others.
