Sky Sports HD starts off the summer with high definition coverage of live international and domestic cricket. England’s Test and One-Day matches against Sri Lanka and Pakistan and each of the county competitions will be screened in the new format with viewers able to see the technique of the batsmen, bowlers and fielders in remarkable clarity. Later this summer domestic football resumes with the Barclaycard Premiership and Coca-Cola League in HD alongside Rugby union’s Guinness Premiership with more sports to be confirmed in the near future. Sky Box Office HD channels will broadcast up to ten of the latest movie premiers in HD each week. May will see Wallace & Gromit shine in the Oscar-Winning HD animation The Curse of the Were-Rabbit and Cameron Diaz in stiletto sharp clarity in In Her Shoes. June’s HD treats include the UK premier of Susan’s Stroman’s The Producers, whilst Viggo Mortensen proves wrinkles can be sexy too in HD in A History of Violence. Sky Movies HD High definition is set to arrive with some pretty impressive special effects, thanks to the likes of Hellboy, Alien Vs Predator, Blade Trinity and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy courtesy of Sky Movies HD. Meanwhile, Kirsten Dunst, Uma Thurman and Keira Knightly are ready to become even more stunning in the HD format, with Hollywood blockbusters including Spider-Man II, King Arthur and Kill Bill Vol 2 on their way this summer. Those of you who don’t mind your leading men looking a bit rumpled will find Clint Eastwood’s rugged good looks appear even more refined in the HD airing of Million Dollar Baby. Meanwhile, Helen Mirren, Glenn Close and Barbra Streisand prove that they’re still looking good, even under the scrutiny of HD in Calendar Girls, The Stepford Wives and Meet The Fockers. Sky One HD Your favourite drama is going to be getting a facelift in the coming months, with the likes of 24 and Bones getting the high definition makeover. Now in its fifth series, 24, starring Keifer Sutherland, features just the right mix of explosive action and tense close ups that bring out the best in the HD format. Meanwhile, the eye-catching good looks of Bones star, David Boreanaz, are going to be even harder to ignore in high definition. Sky One classics such as Star Trek Enterprise, Jake 2.0 and Las Vegas will also be receiving the HD treatment. Artsworld HD National Trust National Treasures is one of Artsworld’s big high definition draws for the summer. It’s the channel’s first programme commissioned in HD, and will feature the likes of Sir Edwin Lutyens’ Castle Drogo and the former home of Modernist architect, Ernö Goldfinger. Saved for the Nation makes similar use of the detailed quality offered by high def, showcasing the top 100 cultural treasures that have been saved for the nation by the Art Fund over the last 103 years, including Diego Velazquez’s The Toilet of Venus and William Hogarth’s Before and After. National Geographic HD Another channel taking full advantage of the high definition format to show the wonders of the natural world is National Geographic. Thunderbeast follows a bison calf through Yellowstone National Park, while Oceans in Glass will provide a behind the scenes look at marine research and conservation. And it’s not just animals who reap the benefits of high definition - Tornado Intercept and Megastructures: Dubai’s Palm Island show the natural and the man made world in vivid detail. Discovery HD Discovery Channel showcases some of the best factual programming in the world and now high definition technology will engage audiences 24-hours a day with breathtaking imagery and panoramic detail, featuring programming on the wonders of the world ranging from culture, engineering, science and natural history. In Journey to the Centre of the Earth, dramatic reconstruction, computer imagery and the ground breaking scientific research tell the story of what lies beneath our feet - from the surface all the way to the core. BBC in HD It goes without saying that the World Cup is going to be a massive draw for the BBC this summer, but this time around viewers get to watch those penalty shoot outs (and the end to 40 years of hurt) in super-clear high definition format for all BBC matches on Sky. Meanwhile Andy Murray’s forehand can be scrutinised in even greater close up at this year’s Wimbledon, and the world is going to look a whole lot more vivid thanks to the high definition airing of David Attenborough’s Planet Earth.
