Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Doctor Who usually appear on students’ T-shirts, but at one university they will soon be on the curriculum. The adventures of classic cult TV heroes, who have stood the test of time, are going to be taught as an MA course at Brunel University, West London. Cult is anything that is seen as quirky, independent and off-centre Students who take the course may learn to ’Shut It!’ like the heroes of cult police series The Sweeney and they will find out why shows such as The Prisoner and The Sweeney were so popular. Course director Xavier Mendik said: ’Cult is anything that is seen as quirky, independent and off-centre. It is TV shows and films that were not mainstream but have survived the test of time and have a large following.’ Students will get the chance to meet cult filmmakers and industry practitioners to get a better understanding of the genre.
