Syfyportal.com Joss WhedonSyfy Portal Awards with Whedonverse Actors - Votes to begin on June 25, 2008Friday 13 June 2008, by Webmaster Who knows if those in charge of nominating television shows for Emmy Awards will notice "Battlestar Galactica" this year. But one thing is for sure: the SciFi Channel is still a favorite with fans. "Battlestar Galactica" earned 11 nominations for the 2008 SyFy Genre Awards, including Best Actor/Television for Edward James Olmos, Best Actress/Television for Mary McDonnell, two Best Episode/Television nods for "Faith" and "He That Believeth In Me," and a Best Series/Television nomination — a category the show won last year for the first time. Russell T. Davies combined to equal the number of nominations earned by "Battlestar Galactica" with two of his own shows, "Doctor Who" and its spinoff "Torchwood." "Doctor Who" picked up six nominations, including Best Actor/Television for David Tennant, Best Actress/Television for Freema Agyeman, Best Episode/Television for "Blink" and Best Series/Television. "Torchwood" earned five nominations including Best Actor/Television for John Barrowman and Best Actress/Television for Eve Myles. "Heroes" earned three nominations — two of which came in the Best Young Actor category for Noah Gray-Cabey and last year’s winner Hayden Panettiere — while "Lost" grabbed two nominations: Best Supporting Actor/Television for Michael Emerson and Best Series/Television. Best Actor/Television is filled with newcomers this year as Jensen Ackles of "Supernatural" and Lee Pace of "Pushing Daisies" joined Barrowman, Olmos and Tennant. Missing from the list is last year’s winner, Joe Flanigan from "Stargate: Atlantis." Pace’s co-star, Anna Friel, picked up a nod for Best Actress/Television, joining Agyeman, McDonnell, Myles and Sophia Myles in the only nomination for "Moonlight," which was canceled last month by CBS. Not getting nominated this year was "Amanda Tapping" from "Stargate SG-1," who won the honors last year. For Best Supporting Actor/Television, Emerson will compete with James Callis, Aaron Douglas and Michael Hogan — all from "Battlestar Galactica" along with Burn Gorman from "Torchwood." Last year’s winner Masi Oka from "Heroes" did not return to the list this year. The Best Supporting Actress/Television category includes Claudia Black from "Stargate SG-1," Summer Glau from "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles," Tricia Helfer from "Battlestar Galactica," Allison Mack from "Smallville" and Katee Sackhoff from "Battlestar Galactica." Left off was last year’s winner, Ali Larter from "Heroes." "Blink" from "Doctor Who," an episode penned by Steven Moffat and directed by Hettie MacDonald, was one of the favorites for Best Episode/Television by the SyFy Genre Awards Nominating Committee. It will face the "Torchwood" episode "Exit Wounds" written by Chris Chibnall and directed by Ashley Way; "Faith" from "Battlestar Galactica" that was written by Seamus Kevin Fahey and directed by Michael Nankin; "The Great Leap Forward" from "The 4400" written by Ira Steven Behr and Craig Sweeny, and directed by Scott Peters; and "He That Believeth In Me" from "Battlestar Galactica," which was written by David Weddle and Bradley Thompson, and directed by Michael Rymer. Best Guest Star/Television includes Michelle Forbes in the "Battlestar Galactica" episode "Razor," Derek Jacobi from the "Doctor Who" episode Utopia, James Marsters from the "Torchwood" episode "Exit Wounds," John Simm from the "Doctor Who" episode "Sound of Drums," and George Takei from the "Heroes" episode "Four Months Ago." Joining Gray-Cabey and Panettiere for Best Young Actor are Conchita Campbell from "The 4400," Jordan Hinson from "Eureka" and Maria Lark from "Medium." In the movie categories, Johnny Depp is up for Best Actor for "Sweeney Todd" along with Robert Downey Jr. for "Iron Man," Harrison Ford for "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," Daniel Radcliffe for "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," and Will Smith for "I Am Legend." In the actress category are Helena Bonham Carter for "Sweeney Todd," Clair Danes for "Stardust," Nicole Kidman for "The Golden Compass," Gwyneth Paltrow for "Iron Man" and Emma Watson for "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix." For best movie, it’s "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," "I Am Legend," "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," "Iron Man" and "Stardust." Among the sites up for Best Web Site are previous winners GateWorld and Whedonesque, that will be joined by SupernaturalTV, TorchwoodTV and SciFi Wire from SciFi Channel. In the Best Web Production category, nominees include "Illiad" from "Star Trek: Odyssey," "Returned" from "The House Between," "Star Trek: Of Gods and Men," "Webisode VIII" from "Sanctuary," and the "Star Trek: New Voyages" episode "World Enough and Time." For Best Series/Television, it’s "Battlestar Galactica," "Doctor Who," "Jericho," "Lost" and "Supernatural." For the Gene Roddenberry Lifetime Achievement Award, the nominees are all writers for the first time ever, and only one of them is still alive. They include Douglas Adams, Arthur C. Clarke, Gene L. Coon, J.K. Rowling and H.G. Wells. Among the networks, the SciFi Channel had the most nominations with 19 while BBC America had five nominations. Both ABC and NBC had four nominations each while The CW finished ahead of CBS with three nominations compared to the larger network’s two. Both Fox and USA earned one nomination each. Voting begins June 25 right here at SyFy Portal. Readers can vote once per day for 30 days between June 25 and July 25, and winners will be announced during SyFy Portal’s 10th anniversary celebration around Aug. 13. |
