TV Gal Tips Her Hat to TV Teens (firefly mention)

By Amy Amatangelo

HOLLYWOOD (Zap2it.com) - - Let’s be honest. Not many people look back at their adolescent years and think, "Thirteen. The acne. The peer pressure. The struggle to fit in. Those were some good times. Let’s go back and live those years again."

Being a teenager is hard. So I can’t even imagine going through my teen years on television, but many people are and doing a fabulous job at it.

Here’s my list of the best teen actors currently on TV. Now this list is for actual teenagers, not the actors who play one on TV. # Michael Cera and Alia Shawkat as George-Michael and Maeby on "Arrested Development": Cera’s facial expressions are pitch-perfect and his comic timing is impeccable. There is something so innocent about his take on George-Michael that you can’t help but laugh right along with him. I’ve been a fan of Shawkat since her days as Hannah on "State of Grace." Her Maeby is so delightfully conniving and convincing that you actually believe she could become a movie executive.

# Michael Welch as Luke on "Joan of Arcadia": Welch is a wonderful and necessary part of this top notch cast. His romance with Grace is one of my favorites on TV. He’s not your stereotypical geek and doesn’t rely on cliches to make his character lovable and heart-breakingly authentic.

# Camille Winbush as Nessa on "The Bernie Mac Show": As Bernie’s oldest niece, Nessa is constantly rolling her eyes at her well-intentioned but constantly clueless uncle. She’s not afraid to tell Bernie when he’s made a parenting mistake. In fact she’ll tell him again, and again, and again. Bernie would be the first to admit he’s a little afraid of Nessa and it’s easy to see why. Winbush has created one of the most realistic teens on prime time.

# Jonathan Ahdout as Behrooz on "24": Seriously, how much to we love Behrooz? I’m rooting for him like I’ve never rooted for a kid before on "24." To portray a child torn between his love for his mother and what he knows is right, takes someone with talent beyond his years. Ahdout has got it.

Who do you think are the best teens on TV? Talk about it on the TV Gal message board.

Quotes of the Week

"Read less, more TV." Dr. House to Allison on "House."

"That will get you in trouble every time." Jack to Sam about love triangles on "Without a Trace." Perhaps a little foreshadowing?

"It’s going to be this dramatic every time." Patrick to host Phil Keoghan when he and his mother check in at the pit stop on "The Amazing Race."

"George, did you ever hear of Fat Joe before?" Donald Trump to his trusty sidekick on "The Apprentice."

"We all tried some new things and that was fun — yard guys, illegitimate daughters, less fighting, more live music." Seth explaining why last year was better on "The O.C."

"But the first amendment is losing its luster lately. Some networks are even censoring scripted dramas." Alan on "Boston Legal" in the episode where the show had to eliminate all references to Fox News.

Where Have I Seen Them Before?

Lochlyn Munro was the missing undercover cop on "Without a Trace." He was Jack on "Charmed" and has guest starred this season on "Las Vegas," "CSI: Miami" and "NCIS."

Jason Segel, Nick on "Freaks & Geeks" and Eric on "Undeclared," was Sam the nightclub worker who Sydney got into trouble on "Alias." He’s also currently playing lab technician Neil on "CSI."

TV Gal reader Lisa was the first to recognize Greg Evigan, Joey on "My Two Dads" and B.J. on "B.J. and the Bear," as Sean Walsh on "CSI: Miami."

All of this week’s bonus points go to TV Gal readers Ayesha and Mindi who recognized that Alan Toy, who played Frank Murdoch, the man Vaughn went to talk to about his father on "Alias," was Professor Finley, the cult leader Kelly got involved with on "90210." Girls, I’m proud of you.

Highlights of the Week Ahead All times listed are Eastern Time for March 21 to 27

So, I write my column, go on vacation and then Mario Vazquez goes and quits on me. How very rude of him. I was skiing (it’s my annual exercise whether I need it or not) and so removed from entertainment gossip (I think the folks at the ski resort just heard about Brad and Jen) that I learned about Vazquez’s disappearing act via the girls on "The View." When you are getting your news from Star Jones, it’s not a good sign. I’m tagging in Anwar Robinson to replace Vazquez. So my new final four picks for "American Idol" (Tuesday, FOX, 8 p.m.) are Bo Bice, Nadia Turner, Carrie Underwood and Anwar Robinson.

Okay, you know how I have to remind myself that Luke and Lorelai aren’t actually a real couple? Well I was actually proud of Lorelai and Sookie when the Dragonfly was named one of the 10 best inns in Connecticut, until I realized, you know, that the inn doesn’t really exist and I can’t take my next vacation there. But "Gilmore Girls" (Tuesday, WB, 8 p.m.) creates relationships and characters that are so real and vivid that they cut viewers to the core. Lorelai’s feud with Emily is some of the most powerful stuff the series has ever taken on and is bringing to the forefront their long-standing tension and juxtaposing it against Lorelai’s struggle to figure out her role in her daughter’s life. Because you know she wants to say something to Rory about this casual relationship with Logan. But I have to know, did you guys ever know rich kids as ridiculous and spoiled as the ones Rory has been meeting at Yale?

Robert Maschio, the scene-stealing the Todd on "Scrubs," has launched his official website (www.robertmaschio.com). It has tons of behind-the-scenes information on "Scrubs" and is definitely worth checking out. This week, "Scrubs" repeats the two episodes staring Michael J. Fox beginning Tuesday at 8:40 p.m. on NBC.

Think it’s too late to get hooked on "Veronica Mars" (Tuesday, UPN, 9 p.m.)? Think again. The recently launched site Mars Investigations, A Beginner’s Guide to Veronica Mars (www.marsinvestigations.net) gives you all the background information you would ever need to know. Get hooked on this show now before it goes the way of "Freaks & Geeks" and "Firefly."

And since is the time to start rallying to save our shows, fans of "Jack & Bobby" (Wednesday, WB, 9 p.m.) want to make sure you know about the website launched to save another fantastic show. Check out http://jackandbobby.lmbdesign.com.

So I have to tell you I recently flew on a plane and no one was as good looking as the folks on "Lost" (Wednesday, ABC, 9 p.m.).

I’m officially declaring "Joey" (Thursday, NBC, 8 p.m.) the most improved show of the season. The half-hour comedy made it through the first half of the season clinging to Matt LeBlanc’s innate charm. But the series finally seems to have found its groove and thankfully expanded Joey’s world — giving him a job and a personal assistant. The episodes with the Soap Opera Awards and Christina Ricci as Joey’s sister were two of the series strongest. I’m glad the series was picked up for next season — it has potential, great actors and writing that continues to improve. It still has a long way to go but that’s more than you can say for most comedies on the air. This week Madchen Amick guest stars as Joey’s new neighbor. So far this season, Amick has had on-screen romances with John Stamos, Noah Wyle and now Matt LeBlanc. That’s a very nice track record.

And while I’m making official declarations, let me also go on record saying that I like "Jake in Progress" (Thursday, ABC, 8:30 p.m.). Maybe it’s because I’ve liked John Stamos since his "General Hospital" days but like Matt LeBlanc, there is something innately charming about Stamos. Plus how can you not like a show with Javier? This week Julie Bowen, Carol on "Ed" starts a recurring role.

Can it get any better? David Gallagher, Simon on "7th Heaven," stops by to give the "Starlet" (Thursday, WB, 9 p.m.) girls some acting advice.

The long-awaited adaptation of "The Office" premieres Thursday at 9:30 p.m. on NBC. Will it be is as good as the British original? Watch the show and let me know what you think.

After too much time away, "Desperate Housewives" returns this Sunday at 9 p.m. on ABC. So does Sharon Lawrence as Maisy Gibbons. Many of you wondered how Maisy could conduct her, um, business on the very nosy Wisteria Lane. We’re about to find out.

Okay, so I’m a little partial to Patrick Dempsey (he was fabulous as Lily and Judy’s brother on "Once and Again"). I couldn’t help but love him in "Grey’s Anatomy" (Sunday, ABC, 10 p.m.). Do we really need another medical drama? I’m not so sure. But throw in Sandra Oh and I’m more than willing to give this show a chance.

To the TV Gal Reader Belongs the Spoils

You know the rules. Don’t read if you don’t want to know.

Heather Locklear will guest star on "Boston Legal" as a murdering widow. And you know what this means — "T.J. Hooker" reunion. Such good times. I cannot wait.

More good times — Amanda Foreman finally returns as Marshall’s wife Carrie on "Alias."

The good times just keep coming — Zach, the only new character who really worked, returns to "The O.C." Meanwhile Ryan’s brother moves in with the Cohens.

Oh I can’t take all this joy — Behrooz and — wait for it — Chloe return to "24."

The first year of marriage is hard and this will make it even more difficult — J.D. and Carla will kiss on "Scrubs."

"The West Wing" will end its season early on April 6 with the Democratic convention. Hmmm ... who do we think is going to get the nomination?

As we try to figure who is going to be the casualty on "Lost," word is that Sawyer will suffer terrible headaches and Locke will suffer physical problems as well (remember what he can do on the island that he couldn’t do before).
