The Joke’s on...Everyone ? (joss whedon mention)

A "V for Vendetta" sequel? Mr. T cast in the next Narnia movie? Last two Harry Potter films to be shot back to back? It seems the last day you should ever be reading movie news just happens to be April Fool’s day. This April 1st was no exception. In fact some of the fake news actually made it into circulation. Did you know that Kate Beckinsale is the new Wonder Woman for Joss Whedon’s film adaption? Well she’s not. Who knows if she was even considered at all? Apparently a lot of fan sites, and a few professionally run ones such as IMDB and Hollywood.com ran the story with no idea that it was all just a big prank. The culprit? Well the story originated at Joblo.com and made no real effort to disguise the fact that nothing was factual. Yet for some reason the story spread anyway.

In the article Joss Whedon was "quoted" as calling Demi Moore "an old fart" and Freddie Prinze Jr "a real nerd" (for sending old issues of Wonder Woman comics with wife, Sarah Michelle Gellar’s, head superimposed). He also "apparently" made several comments regarding what attresses were offering him for the part. " I couldn’t tell you how many actresses...I’m talking married women here, promised to blow me left, right and center if I gave them the part." The article ends with links to past april fools stories, including "Alan Cumming weds Keanu Reeves".

But while Joblo usually puts work into one story every April 1st, sites like Darkhorizons dedicated the entire day to fake news posts. All of which are usually well written and almost...believable? Shooting the last two Harry Potter films back to back to make the best of the casts’ young age would have made perfect sense to me. And it would have been just like Hollywood to take advantage of "Crash"’s recent oscar win and make a sort of sequel but set it in New York instead of L.A. I give Garth Franklin, the sites’ chief editor, major props for his stories. Several years ago he posted the plotline for Batman 5 (Before "Batman Begins" was even being considered) which killed Robin in the first scene, and i bought that one like the little fan-boy I am.

I think what is the most enjoyable about it, is that these articles often catch you unaware. If you are new to the website (or just forgot what they pulled last year) you’ll be thinking twice about what you have just read. And don’t worry if one fools you in the end. I’m sure Kate Beckinsale is wishing some of them were true too.
