Those Wacky Emmys ! (angel mentions)

Saturday 25 September 2004, by Webmaster

That Garry Shandling is still some kind of funny dude!
Here are the crazy crazy noms. My even more out-of-step comments are in red. Hey now!!

Outstanding Comedy Series
Arrested Development • FOX •
Curb Your Enthusiasm • HBO •
Everybody Loves Raymond • CBS •
Sex And The City • HBO
Will & Grace • NBC •
Most deserving is "Curb Your Enthusiasm," no contest.

Outstanding Drama Series
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation • CBS •
Joan Of Arcadia • CBS •
The Sopranos • HBO •
24 • FOX •
The West Wing • NBC •
It’s insane (if not surprising) that "Angel" isn’t on this list; it did a better job of closing out the "Buffy" story than "Buffy" did. Of the nominees, I say "24" deserved it this year over "The Sopranos," if only because of the amazing 2004 virus episodes. Everything after Gael got sprayed was gold.

Outstanding Variety, Music Or Comedy Series
Chappelle’s Show • Comedy Central •
The Daily Show With Jon Stewart •
Late Night With Conan O’Brien • NBC •
Late Show With David Letterman • CBS •
Saturday Night Live • NBC •
"Conan’s" written material is the funniest stuff on the air, but "The Daily Show" is more consistent. Give it to TDS.

Outstanding Writing For A Drama Series
Deadwood • Deadwood (Pilot) • HBO •
The Sopranos • Where’s Johnny? • HBO •
The Sopranos • Unidentified Black Males • HBO •
The Sopranos • Long Term Parking • HBO •
The Sopranos • Irregular Around The Margins • HBO •
The "Hole in the World" episode of "Angel" was far better than any of these, but I’ll remember "Long Term Parking" forever.

Outstanding Writing For A Comedy Series
Arrested Development • Pilot • FOX •
Frasier • Goodnight, Seattle • NBC •
Scrubs • My Screwup • NBC •
Sex And The City • An American Girl In Paris (Part Deux) • HBO
Sex And The City • The Ick Factor • HBO •
Whoa! Where’s "Curb"? Where’s the "Wonderfalls" pilot? Among the nominees, I’ll take "Arrested Development."

Outstanding Writing For A Variety, Music Or Comedy Program
Chappelle’s Show • Comedy Central •
Chris Rock: Never Scared • HBO •
The Daily Show With Jon Stewart • Comedy Central •

"Conan" is absolutely the best written of these.

Brad Garrett as Robert Barone Everybody Loves Raymond • CBS •
Peter Boyle as Frank Barone Everybody Loves Raymond • CBS •

Brad Dourif as Doc Cochran Deadwood • HBO •
Michael Imperioli as Christopher Moltisanti The Sopranos • HBO •
Steve Buscemi as Tony Blundetto The Sopranos • HBO •

Kim Cattrall as Samantha Jones Sex And The City • HBO •
Kristin Davis as Charlotte York Sex And The City • HBO •

Adam Baldwin, "Angel." Of the nominees, Shatner for sure.

Louise Fletcher as Miss Eva Garrison Joan Of Arcadia • CBS •
Mare Winningham as Sandra Blaine Law & Order: Special Victims Unit • NBC •
Marlee Matlin as Dr. Amy Solwey Law & Order: Special Victims Unit • NBC •
Betty White as Catherine Piper The Practice • ABC •

Carole Davis, who played the head of Wolfram & Hart Italy on the antepenultimate "Angel." Of the nominees, Betty White.

Georgia Engel as Pat Everybody Loves Raymond • CBS •
Laura Linney as Charlotte Frasier • NBC •
Christina Applegate as Amy Friends • NBC •

Outstanding Reality Program
Colonial House • PBS
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition • ABC •
Penn & Teller: Bullshit! • Showtime •

"Project Greenlight," hands down. It may be the best reality show ever forged.

Outstanding Reality-Competition Program
The Amazing Race • CBS •
American Idol • FOX •
The Apprentice • NBC •
Last Comic Standing • NBC •
Survivor • CBS •
"Big Brother" is better than all of these, but "Amazing Race" is the best of the nominees.
