‘Veronica’ a buffer for ‘Buffy’ fans

There are people out there - they know who they are - who’ve never really gotten over the end of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”

I’d like to introduce them to Buffy’s spiritual successor, UPN’s “Veronica Mars.”

Veronica could use them. Hell, she could use anybody at this point because 2.4 million viewers a week isn’t enough to guarantee a future, even on UPN, which is enjoying the novelty of launching a show critics love.

I realize that for people whose allegiance to the Buffyverse was written in blood, Veronica (Kristen Bell) might fall a little short (even though “Buffy’s” Alyson Hannigan began a guest stint this week).

No superpowers. No “one girl in all the universe” mythology. No tortured-vamp boyfriend.

Neptune, the wealthy beach town where Veronica lives with her police chief-turned-private eye father (Enrico Colantoni), isn’t built on a Hellmouth, like Buffy’s Sunnydale, but hellish things nevertheless happen there.

Veronica’s best friend, Lilly Kane, was murdered a little more than a year ago. Her father, Keith Mars, lost his job, and apparently his wife, because he was inclined to blame Lilly’s father, the fabulously rich Jake Kane (Kyle Secor) for Lilly’s death. Lilly’s brother, Duncan (Teddy Dunn) broke up with Veronica at about the same time - maybe not such a bad thing because there’s a teensy possibility Jake Kane might be Veronica’s father - and Veronica, who as Duncan’s girl had been a popular kid, ended up being drugged and raped at a party.

Cheerful, huh?

In less skilled hands than executive producer Rob Thomas’ (“Cupid”), this might be grim fare, but thanks to some of the snappiest dialogue since “Buffy,” and the acting chops of Bell (last seen as a deceptively innocent hooker on HBO’s “Deadwood”), “Veronica Mars” is instead a weekly celebration of one young woman’s resilience, strength and sense of humor.

“I think that this is a very, very realistic depiction of what it’s like to be a loner,” Bell said last month, while admitting that her own high school years, as a beautiful girl who could sing and act, were a far cry from Veronica’s.

“‘Alias’ and ‘Buffy’ are fantastic to be able to show the strength of a woman, but ... how many of us really are going to be a CIA agent? And how many of us really are going to fight vampires?” she said.

I recently gave Veronica Mars a chance - I didn’t know much about it and the name of the show wasn’t enough to attract me to watch it or even read a synopsis of it - then I happened on a blurb that it was "Buffy’esque" minus all the supernatural parts...

I couldn’t imagine this but gave a chance anyway - and became an instant fan. It certainly "feels" familiar, and Bell is excellent (and reminds me more of a cross between Buffy, Anya, and Willow all mixed in - viewers can make there own decisions if they agree and which parts contribute to which aspects of the character).

Definitely give this show a watch - 2 watches if it takes you a while to appreciate a show with an arc (though self-contained episodes are very well done!). The payoff is huge, and much needed in this post-buffy period of mouring (which, for some like myself, may just go on forever ).

I’m almost afraid to like it - due to television’s unpleasant habit of cancelling any show I like, and the fact that I usually don’t let myself get into a show on for less than a few seasons, I’m terrified my voodoowoowoo will cause this true gem to get cancelled after one season. Supernatural paranoia aside, this is a show well worth watching, and is incredibly interesting and intriguing enough that you don’t miss the vamps and demons - and the use of "real" people who can be as bad (or worse!) means the metaphor that Buffy exploited is here in undiluted form - and as exciting (and disturbing) as ever.

Kudos to UPN for this show - and if listening - Hey - give it another season minimum (tho if it maintains the current level of excellence, I’m up for 7 seasons!)! Thanks for a first rate show! :-)

why do you feel as though you are "betraying" Buffy? It ended, and might as well watch something good. I don’t agree with the Buffy comparisons. Its more like smallville by way of good acting/writing/everything... without the superpowers... its nice to watch something grounded in reality for a while... :-)

Haven’t seen it yet...it’ll take ages to get to the UK (if ever!); but I know what you mean about feeling like liking another show is betraying the Buffiverse...I’m just trying on Alias for size & I feel that I’ve let the side down...

    Buffiverse forever!

I caught the pilot, I had so idea about all the "buffy" comments about it. I loved it, still do. It’s a witty, intersting show with charactors more advanced then the WB shows or FOX. I want to push this show, it’s some of the best writing I’ve seen in a while, now that the buffyverse is gone.

I look forward to VM each week. It ain’t Jossverse but I’ve seen every Buffy 4 times and some more. Angel 3 times and once you can quote the lines it just isn’t as entertaining. To see Allison H. working on V.Mars is heartwarming! I think her husband would be the obvious choice for the next James Bond. He smoked in Season 5 Angel! I’m 52 a dedicated cine and tv fan and I’ve never enjoyed anything like JossW’s work, But Kristen Bell is excellent and the writing is improving. Talk to people about it, encourage them to watch and given a chance it may become great.

It doesn’t appeal to me....I’ve outgrown the high school shows. Which is why I am so frustrated when more adult-oriented shows Angel, Tru calling, Enterprise, etc. get axed.

I would advise all not to waste their time and feelings on a UPN show. They have become another FOX, and have no loyalty to the fans of said programs.

I tuned in for the pilot because AICN was giving it some buzz, and I haven’t missed a single episode since. Yes, I admit as dorky as it is, I do feel a slight tinge of guilt for loving Veronica Mars so much because I am so loyal to Buffy. But come on, when good tv comes on, you gotta embrace it. VM is good tv. It’s got wit and drama just like Buffy. It’s made such an impression on me that I even went out and read Rob Thomas’s first novel. It was really good as well. Rob Thomas is very talented, even if he isn’t Joss Whedon, it’s still okay to enjoy his show. Cause lets face it, a buffy spinoff just aint gonna happen guys.

I would say Veronica Mars could develop into a long running show just like "Buffy". It has the same Pop in the writing and acting. I hope more people watch it.
