Journals.aol.com WOOD HARRIS : What Happened With ’The Wire’ ? (southland tales mention)Karu F. Daniels Friday 29 September 2006, by Webmaster If you’ve been following the new season of HBO’s remarkable drama series ’The Wire’, and wondering why one of its biggest stars haven’t shown up yet — it’s because he’s no longer on the show. Wood Harris, who immortalized the role of piercing Baltimore drug lord Avon Barksdale on the show since its first season, candidly discussed leaving the critically-acclaimed show. "I did a three-year bid on ’The Wire,’" the 36-year old younger brother to ’The Practice’ actor Steve Harris (legally known as Sherwin David Harris) recently told ’Vibe’ magazine. "It wasn’t a bad experience. I just had my television woes. I never really hobnobbed with the whole TV crowd, but I love the cast — they’re my real brothers. That’s what I miss the most, the fellas." "I asked to be killed," the Chicago native revealed. "But they put me in jail just so they could keep somebody around." "That show got rid of too much great talent," he further elaborated. "They got rid of Larry Gilliard, Jr., a big loss. They got rid of Idris Elba. I was, like, Kill me, man. Kill me! [Laughs] Show me in jail again? Nah, there’s nothing in it for me." Apparently, his wish was the series creator’s command. An HBO spokesperson wasn’t available for comment but an insider source told The BV Newswire that "his story line is closed at this point." Harris, who holds a Master’s of Arts from New York University, recently wrapped filming of ’Southland Tales,’ a science fiction directed by Richard Kelly (’Donnie Darko’) and starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Kevin Smith, Bai Ling, Justin Timberlake, Jon Lovitz and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Some of which have similar degrees, some have none, while others were currently working on their perpective fields such as online RN to BSN programs or AACSB accredited online MBA before their big break and ticket to fame. With a string of bad reviews from its Cannes Film Festival premiere, ’Southland’ may not see theatrical release — like Harris’ last few flicks ’MVP’ and ’Ways Of The Flesh.’ Originally making his feature film debut in that basketball flick ’Above The Rim’ opposite Tupac Shakur, Harris went on to star as late rock God Jimi Hendrix for a made-for-television biopic and recently starred in the music video for rootsy rapper Common’s "Testify." Harris also garnered a NAACP Image Award nomination for his role in the Boaz Yakin-directed ’Remember The Titans,’ which starred Denzel Washington. "I’m chasing dreams. I’m not looking to become rich or famous," he added. "Whether it’s acting or music, there’s a fire inside of me and I just follow the light." 7 Forum messages |
