Will Buffy & Angel’s BBC Cult Website Close ?

Commercial media groups will be rubbing their hands in glee after the BBC confirmed today that it will be cutting back some controversial areas of its online presence.

The move follows stinging criticism in a report by Philip Graf on bbc.co.uk earlier this year into the corporation’s impact on commercial operations and is part of a BBC-wide review of operations in which 10% of costs will be slashed.

One of the biggest beneficiaries of the cutbacks, outlined by director of new media and technology, Ashley Highfield, will be regional press and local radio media owners.

The bbc.co.uk’s Where I Live section will no longer carry listings for local entertainment venues - such as cinemas, clubs and bars - after media owners claimed they were losing potential classified advertising revenue.

Local BBC websites will now provide links to local classified listings sites, such as local press and radio stations. Highfield said: “To meet the 10% target set out by the BBC Governors, we are announcing today a further 7.5% reduction to be achieved through lowering investment in areas where we feel this will not cause a reduction in public value, and by sharing resources with the commercial world.

Other areas of the bbc.co.uk’s online services to be axed include its coverage of US sports, which as its own dedicated section, and the Cult website, which covers shows such as The Simpsons and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
