Usually Sci-fi shows sell way more dvd box sets than any other genre, but regardless of the genre, the amount of selling of such box sets is usually a consequence of how much fame and following the show had while it was "on air", a straight-to-dvd show would only be a success if it was heavily promoted, making it more expensive than a regular tv episode, and to make money with DVDs, a low-budget is usually a must.

Warner Bros didn’t try to restart Babylon 5 with DVDs, on the contrary, it made a couple of VERY low-budget movies to make some money and help make a ton of money selling the then newly-released B5 dvd box sets.
